BIG TIME MASTER wrote:No, religion has not killed more people than governments. Religion is sometimes used as a scapegoat or to fire up the uneducated masses, or as Stalin likes to call them, "useful idiots."
That is not calling a person of faith an idiot, but a person coerced into killing in the name of his faith is an idiot.

Here are a few counts from the 20th century alone:

    China (PRC) (1949 – 1987) — 76,702,000 people killed.
    USSR (1917 – 1987 ) — 61,911,000 people killed.
Western Colonialism (combined) — 50,000,000 people killed.
    Hitler’s Germany (1933 – 1945) — 20,946,000 people killed, including their own population.
    Japan (1936 – 1945) — 5,964,000 people killed.
    Pol Pot’s Cambodia (1975 – 1979) — 2,035,000 people killed.

The total estimate for the 20th century is 262,000,000. That's two hundred and sixty two million. That's not a number anybody can understand, but all these people who were killed were not anybody unlike you, your mom, dad, sister, brother, best friend, coworker, etc.

I guess that works if you attribute all war deaths to 'government'...

Technically, you can, since the government is what governs what all army regiments do, and the people in the regiments get killed, so I guess you can attribute it that way.

Mao (China)killed his own people, as did Stalin (Russia), as did Hitler (Germany). I don't know about the other ones, but I'd bet its the same.

One important point to consider also is that every one of these guys immediately banned private gun ownership rights, all under the guise of public safety. Infer what you will from that. I think it is a very important point.

    Got some advice here:

Don't run into people you know by accident on the Internet. It can get slightly awkward, and a bit confusing. (A certain someone will know what I'm talking about.)

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Also in some cases religion and past governments were intermixed from the start. I think Japan would be a good example of that, and it was because of that tradition from religion and governmental power advocated the deaths of others.
