Ok. Remember my earlier mystery damage to a host. Just saw the bandit backstab one. Confirmation of badassery. He did about 1100

My only problem now is do I love the backstabbing bandit or the healing cleric more?

If only we were on the same system. After we met there would be no forest left to defend, merely a smoking crater with explosive chocolate rain falling from clouds of cotton candy in the middle of it.
Sadly, no one that visits the thread will get that.

Re: For the Glory of Alvina
With battle nearly upon us I introduce you to a set of tactics which I have seen little discussed on the forum but opens up a whole new world of playing in the forest. I call it 'Garden Party'. Wish I could lay claim to this idea but it was a friendly red who introduced me to it.
Most people are aware that you can drop down into the basin but where they run down towards the hydra I turn 180 degrees and run up towards the stone giants. The important point is that you can always get to the stone giants, even if the entrance is blocked, by dropping off the ledge behind the last tree before the bonfire. This leads to the hidden passage which you go through to find the wolf ring. As a phantom you can walk through the trees which block the two entrances to the passage.
The five stone giants with their twopping ability and four swarming trees is practically a small army to help you. If that doesn't convince you I have seen on occassion the poisonous lizards will join in the melee and I have been reliably informed that the big tree which blocks the passage has done so as well. If battle goes against you then you can retreat up the tower or through the hidden passage for the two stone giants and three flying toads (note that going up the stairs to where the wolf ring is gives an excellent look out point).
Pure gankers and dragon glitchers get invited to the 'Garden Party', where the odds are stacked against any forest invader. If they fail to follow you I can still be a nuisance by relaying info to other forest invaders (you can see part of the forest from around the corner of the wall where the bonfire is), and message them to drop down and join you, attack through the gate and try to encourage them to fight you or throw items over the wall to the right of the fogged gate (at least once I distracted the host this way and they got bs'd).
So if anyone tomorrow gets a strange message saying 'stone giants' you have been invited to join a friend at a 'Garden Party'.

Re: For the Glory of Alvina
There's been mention of a few tricks with the basin jump off but reminders never hurt. I've never had anyone follow me sadly so all I have been able to do is eat time (which is fun) and stare at things with binoculars for research (also fun) on their quarter so to speak. I know the usual idea is the hydra since it's damage is crazy high but the Stone Giants are also a great option, particularly when grouped. Just standing on the Elite Knight corpse oughta lead to victories over many.
Oh yeah....if I haven't got ya yet.....welcome to the forum

Re: For the Glory of Alvina
There's a spot in which a fall to the basin is, shall we say, "less than fatal." Once you're in the basin you can walk to the Hydra area although there will be a fog gate at the top of the ladder. You can walk back toward the parish but again, fog door. You can also choose to head to the stone knight area with elite knight set and even the Moonlight Butterfly area and up to the tower if you wish. You can see a good deal of the forest up there, even the Artorias door area and possible fighting by the stairs. Befowler likely hit someone with the dragon slayer bow from there once. You can go the forest area leading to the wolf ring. Anywhere in the forest really. You can't get back to the PvP area you started in so to fight they need to follow. It makes excellent griefing for campers if they don't know the jump as you can take an invasion slot until they quit or die, slowing down their game.
I once got a group with a bad connection and did this to them. I was the only person that invaded in over ten minutes so they were pretty much just chilling in the forest. I assume making gestures to each other.

Re: For the Glory of Alvina
Killed many a 'ganker' with the stone giants. The more nuisance you can give before the jump the likelier they will follow. Think it's in their nature to get 'the one that got away' if they are having an easy time.
Tested it last night with my 80 sl toon and about 50% of them followed. However I only do this against obvious unfair behaviour such as dragon glitchers, 2v1 twoppers, fog ringers, etc.

The problem with the hydra is that you can't rely on it to be there, can be killed by missle fire from the forest and its attack can harm you as much as your opponent.

Re: For the Glory of Alvina
^^Yup....the Stone Knights are way more devious and probably effective. I'm leery about campers learning our tricks so I don't usually do a cliff jump where they can see me. Might be why they don't follow. One time I did it and messaged the camper that I left a present for him near the bonfire. I waited for him to show up near the door and hit it a few times and cast a WoG so he knew I wasn't bluffing on my location. Then I just waited around since the fog door obviously wasn't letting him through. He never found me so I imagine he didn't know the jump point. And that folks...is the most evil thing I've done to someone in this game.

Re: For the Glory of Alvina
I like jumping off, making a big show of heading up the path, and then put on the fog ring and try to sneak back down under the lip of the ledge you just jumped off. A number of times I've bushwhacked farmers that way. You can either backstab 'em after they land, or if you're worried about getting hit with a drop attack from one of their friends you just stand under the lip and fry them with CSS. The CSS cast time is close to their fall recovery time, so they're usually just standing back up when they get speared. If you do get chased all the way to the stone knights etc, the channeler's trident buff is hilariously fun particularly if the knights start TWOPing. And sometimes just hiding is your best tactic, the hard core high level farmers hate any slowdown in their kill rates. They'll often suicide to get rid of you if you make them wait 10 minutes with no action (disconnects can happen, but less common since these guys do not want to corrupt their level 700s). I've gotten 2-3 million souls a bunch of times this way.

Oh okay. I would not do that personally simply because BKGA is too slow for shield slamming
