Help Countering Weapon Classes Empty Help Countering Weapon Classes

Post by Anulpanda Thu Jun 27, 2013 2:08 pm

    Hello,

I am new to the forums, but have been lurking for quite some time.
I consider myself to be pretty darn good at pvp, winning about 80% of my matches while I solo host the forest. However even though I have a strength build aswell, I have trouble countering UGS, GS, and Curved GS.

For UGS I can always menu swap to a spear, or roll bs if they spam r1, but the massive poise damage always trips me up to my death, seeing as toggle escape is one of the few techniques I've yet to learn. Also scared as hell to parry these things, and the rolling poke attacks are deadly in the right hands.

For greatswords since the patch the timing seems different so I fail to catch the parry window on them, that's about my only problem with them.

For curved greatswords I only feel comfortable parrying the roll attack as most roll attacks are predictable. The awkward swing speed often causes me to miss a parry and get sent to stun-lock oblivion.

I switch up my tactics very often to keep pvp fresh, so I am always searching for new, fun ways to counter things since pvp is a big rock/paper/scissors game.
My playstyle is almost always aggressive, and I usually opt for fast roll w/ good poise since I have pumped endurance. Most of the time I use either dex or quality weapons but that changes often.

So I've told you my strengths & weaknesses, how about some advice?
Also, if anyone is down to trade/duel on a sl200 build let me know.

    Good day then.

This is a good place for looking to find good information on how to better yourself in the game.

My strategy for encountering these things is usually to poke them to death with a long weapon, such as a spear or a rapier, use whatever ranged weapon I have, or dodge around them a lot to make them start getting careless, then swoop in for easy back-stabs and hits when they let their guard down. Dodging around with a bow and shooting them after every swing can be an easy thing to do, but most people don't let you keep shooting them long enough to warrant a kill just by that tactic.

I am the adapt, react and counter player. I change based on how the other fights so that is how I win.

    Thanks for the link Archmage.
I use the rapiers & spears alot so I'm trying to shy away from those excluding my beloved Velka's.
My main build is also an int build so magic is an easy counter but I'm also trying to shy away from magic aswell, and most str builds use faith in conjunction so they can just GMB me.

The bow-dodge tactic sounds fun though, I shall try that out.

And Soris I use the same tactics often for setup parries & menu swapping .

The difference for me is that I don't swap weapon till I need to. My main build uses the chaos blade 99% of fights but I can swap to 5 other weapons I have experience to use. Setup parries are a so-so good but I have this tendency to parry the 2nd attack of a weapon and as my finisher move.

3 Easy Steps to beat UGS:

    1. Position yourself one roll away from your opponent.
    2. Don't press any buttons.
    3. When they attack, roll BS them.

The same thing will work against GS and CGS, though not as well.

Ah the good old roll BS. I need to get better at those honestly but have been trying to avoid backstabs if possible in a duel. In their defense they can always just unlock and let loose a 2nd swing as I always do on my str build with the DGM.

Can anyone help me out with a good thread on toggle-escaping?
I have tried many a times but to no avail.

    3. When they attack, roll BS them.

It will work, but not consistently against people who fight unlocked.  I use Zwei a lot lately and virtually never lock it.  Sometimes the UGS can just walk up closer to you before beginning the swing.  Very often, I'll favor one side slightly and when I start my swing, angle it to my "open" side to a decent degree.

Pokes on spears and rapiers are the most consistent threat; Zwei just has no easy answer to that if they poke + roll away, aside from a weapon swap.  An exception might be if they do the rolling attack, but THEN you can roll BS (or parry).

Another typical and solid reaction is to just pull out a bow and drop a few poison arrows on the zwei guy.  They're suddenly going to be mindful of stamina and want to get rid of it.  Or, just use spells despite not wanting to on these guys.  Even GMB won't last forever, so just keep your distance until it wears off and start chipping/blasting them.

CurvedGS are a sunovabeech. That awkward I'm not swinging I'm not swinging I'm not swi-I swung! speed their 1h moveset has throws off my ability to parry as well. So I simply don't parry against them.

If you have a faster swinging weapon, katana spear straight sword thrusting sword curved sword dagger and some halberds you can land hits between their swings and then roll away. So if you just stay close and swing as soon as they start then roll out of your attack animation you'll quickly teach them not to just haphazzardly R1 while you're close. Which means they'll turn either to their 2h moveset (much easier to roll BS) or their R2 attacks (much easier to move around) Which is good for you.

    Welcome Anulpanda.  Bow

I like the advice everyone has given you thus far.

However my friend, didn't you sorta ask and answer your own question? lol

If you're aggressive BE aggressive, if your passive then be passive.  Ever since I got away from my Falchion/DMB and started playing with spacing and making duels last longer than 10 seconds, I never looked back.  But that's my style preference, and I've stuck to it.

And BTW everyone could always use parry practice lol.  No one can sight parry every weapon on command, don't be so hard on yourself.

I guess you have 2 options:

    1) Hit em like a Mack Truck any way you can.

    2) Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.

    My advice.

Stop playing at SL 200. Countering with spears/rapiers/magic is such as easy thing to do, that it would be much more beneficial to you to use other methods. Learn to toggle escape, and either become more confident with your parries, or realize your not that good at them, and wont be able to parry every weapon.

Sound advice you three, I will consider.

& Goober I mentioned earlier that I have been avoiding magic & poking weapons since I agree that they are almost too easy. And I don't want to be reliant on parries, I just like to throw them in as a finishing move or if I'm at an extreme disadvantage. The only real benefit of my sl 200 is the high endurance for good poise/fast roll. I only have that char and a str/fai sl 120 which is not my dueling preference so I will stick with my build. If I didn't emphasize it enough I change my weapons and gear around almost every time I die to keep PvP interesting. Your post was slightly harsh for someone who lives in a bong  (Your location)

Other than that thank you all for you advice Bow
I will learn to toggle-escape & better my roll bs.
Hope to see you in the forest!
