Is "gamer girl" a derogatory term? Empty Is "gamer girl" a derogatory term?

Post by XachAttack Thu Mar 28, 2013 11:30 pm

Pardon the ignorant question, I've never really payed attention to things like this, but it seems to be popping up alot lately and I keep hearing negative things about the term.

I know it refers to gamers who are female, but that's about it. I don't have any personal thoughts on it.

So, what's up with it o-O?

I know of a few. I would say it is derogatory term, in a way. Why single out one gender?

It's not, why would it be? I'm a gamer Guy.

I think people are usually referring to "Wannabe gamer girls. Ones that think they are Hipster because they play battlefield instead of COD.

I would say yes and no, depending on the context. The term itself just means that the gamer is a girl, plain and simple. In some cases, it may be meant in a derogatory sense indicating that the girl part somehow detracts from the gamer part. On the other hand, it can also indicate the opposite and be a term of respect, attaching the girl part to emphasize that, in spite of being a gamer, and assumedly a skilled one, they still maintain the feminine qualities that many girls pride themselves on. It can also be something that gamer guys find attractive, since most people like it when others share their interest. Ultimately, I think it comes down to context.

It would depend on how it it is used I would imagine, context matters a lot.

I know that in talking to a lot of girls the term "girlfriend mode" does bother them, however.

I dunno why it would be, I just assumed so because alot of people seem to get pretty angry when they hear it.

Yeah, I guess that makes a bit more sense.

My view: Girl Gamer= a girl who plays video games just like a guy gamer. What is the deal with that? We all play video games in the end and have something in common. Too much to ask for gender walls to not be mixed with gaming?

I'm not fond of the term. An issue I have is that it gets redundant.

    "Oh, she's a gamer girl."

"Thanks. Since I know she is female, if you said she is a gamer I would have realize that she is both a female and a gamer at the same time."

Now, if you met a man that suddenly turned into a female when played games, alright fair enough. He is a Gamer Girl.

If it is offensive, I'd just say that's more so based on the context.

Gamer girl is usually inoffensive. Girl gamer, especially Grrl gamer, is often used to refer to women who use their girl gamer status to gain attention, support, etc. from white knights.

I wouldn't take offence at the term, but I would not use it to describe myself.

I am a gamer, all other info is irrelevant.

The way I see, it's both a derogatory term and not at the same time, here's how I see it:

#1. On one hand you have gamer girls. They're just girls that like video games, no biggie.

#2. Then there's GAMURRRR GURRRLSSSS. They're the ones that play games for the attention more than the fun. Letting you know at any point that they can that yes, they are a girl and they're playing a game, how astonishing. I like to think that the ones who stream and have three pictures of themselves taking up 90% of the screen fall into this.

They're also guys that do that too, but no one pays attention to them because they are guys and who cares.

I don't get why the term exists in the first place, they're gamers, we're all gamers. People who seem to attribute it to those who supposedly do it for the attention can skip the female attribution and leave it at the point that they're not gamers.

I guess since it's different than the norm, as I hear it was mostly males who were into games for a while, they feel the need to overexaggerate it alot.

Off topic, but I don't suppose Yurt is scrambling eggs there? I'm in the mood for some XD.

It also doesn't help the image of females who play games with so many Uncle Toms going around pandering to young boys that watch their videos.

Felicia Day is sort of a weird one.

Sometimes she comes off like that, but she actually is a really big gamer. She kind of puts on the act but sometimes she doesn't.

She wouldn't be as successful if she didn't use her gender to her advantage.

I hear what you're saying but how would you advise one to not use their gender to an advantage, or disadvantage if that is the case? One's gender is one's gender. Felicia Day is a female, how can she nullify that fact?

She can't. As I said I don't really hate her for doing that or anything. I don't like it, I might enjoy her work if she cut that sort of thing out. It makes her money though and she'd be an idiot to not make oodles of cash off of it. She's very business minded.

All I can do is enjoy the few moments where things genuinely funny happen around her.

    https://youtu.be/0he24TXFSeo

I think this is the greatest moment involving her.
