    Gaming's future

Post by DoughGuy on Fri May 18, 2012 10:05 am

    http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-reasons-diablo-iii-represents-gamings-annoying-future/
(Nothing against Diablo specifically, I;m referring to this sort of trend in gaming as a whole).
What are your opinions on this sort of thing? Are companies going too far to stop piracy? I know that for a whole year where I had no internet on my gamin PC I basically played Sins of a solar empire. I also bought 3 new games which i couldnt play without conecting to the net. Why did I buy them? Because the box either didnt clearly tell me it needed it or a *** label on the box covered the warning.

Don't they realise that trying to stop piracy is pointless? Piracy doesn't not represent a loss of sale or missed profits. If someone pirates a game, they would never have bought it anyway. However, blizzard are going to pay heavily for this farce - legitimate buyers will turn abandon the game.

The thing is I dont think pircy was ever a big enough problem. But by putting in DRM they encourage piracy which they think means MOAR DRM! which just increases piracy .. I think you see where this is going. And yes you're right. not everyone who pirates would/could buy the game.

Ah Blizzard, I remember the days of when you were one of my favourite companies, how far you have fallen. DRM, a thing I like to pretend doesn't exist, does indeed sort of give incentive to pirates. In fact if they have a single player version of Diablo 3 for people to download, well I can see Blizzard losing a lot of potential customers due to their terrible design. Frankly though I take a bit of a different approach, when I was a PC gamer that is. I would boycott a product, yeah Boycott. I wouldn't purchase it, but I wouldn't pirate it either. I would show them that they completely lost a potential buyer to their own stupidity rather than piracy. Of course I made a fraction of a fraction of a difference, but if more people did this rather than trying to justify the illegal activity companies wouldn't just blindly blame piracy for their own idiocy. Though if they do they'll just make things worse and go out of business eventually.

So, how about that on disk "DLC?"

Frankly doing that is just appalling, people will buy the genuine article most of the time so they can get the online experience, while frankly only the minority pirate (or they're playing the game years after it was released and emulate it)

I think doing stuff like on disk DLC isn't something that will stop piracy, it just sends the wrong message to customers.

Especially since on the PC with some console commands you can unlock the DLC for yourself in some cases.

I'm guessing the letters WoW and it's 100 different (but almost identical) versions have absolutely NOTHING to do with that...

    First Expansion.

"Alright, are you guys ready to fight *** DEMONS, in a new outlandish world where you can now fly on dragons and strange creatures as you fight the turned hero you once played as in Warcraft, and the other abominations and stop the invasion of the burning legion!"

    Second Expansion.

"It's time to head to Northerend and see a more story inclusive leveling zone as well as fighting hordes of the undead as we march on Icecrown to defeat the Scourge and free Azeroth of this danger, and finally defeat the Lich King!"

    Third Expansion.

"The world is falling apart as the chaotic elements of the planet with the help of the old gods and Deathwing rise up to try and destroy all life! Fight to try and regain the favour of the planet as you piece together zone by zone the shattered remains of the continents!"

    Fourth Expansion.

"Travel to the mystic island of Pandaria and meditate with Panda monks and learn of their culture."

The problem with World of Warcraft outside of the millions of tiny things.

That's the issue. You have a game that has a certain audience, then with your latest installment you just take it in a completely different, unwanted, direction. Blizzard sort of has this issue where they listen to their Loud Minority, thinking they are a majority.

But something on a smaller scale, they also nerf the hell out of everything, and intentionally make bosses weaker so that everyone can beat them.

That example makes me instantly think of Bronies silly

but yeah, I see how that could be bad, then again I'd have a problem with them releasing expansion after expansion rather than another game with lots of content..

That's another one, it's incredibly old. It has a lot of content, but a majority of it you're not going to play because it is either low level, very annoying, or in an area you aren't going to travel to as it's annoying. Black Temple, amazing Raid. During WotlK I met very few players who even knew what it was, with Cata and now MoP, that's going to be even worse. The issue is they're making money off it, and it's technically the most polished MMO out there so people get drawn to it. But it's sort of like keeping a really old car for the sake of nostalgia, when you really should just buy a new car. But you try to ration it saying oh you're used to it, you know every bit of how it handles, but you ignore the rust and failing systems.

I had high hopes for TOR, but then the issue was it was just too much of a WoW clone, so you might as well just play WoW. Planetside 2, now that's going to be an MMO that should suck everyone away from this over-saturated crap.

Think Battlefield, but make the map continent sized. now add three factions all fighting for bases and resources across fields cityscapes and huge military bases ... now make the world persistant and huge on an MMO level (1000 players or more a server) then add every Job an army could have and thats planetside 2

ooh yeah, its all free as well

"Games get expensive. Not many people can afford to pay for them. There are those who can, and do buy your games. What can you do with those loyal customers? You should release an updated version of that same game they bought, but make it totally incompatible with the last one" - By Capcom; MvC3 and UMvC3.

"Hey, let's make it pay to win!" - By Capcom; SFxT

"Your internet broke down? NO ASSASSIN'S CREED 2 SINGLEPLAYER FOR YOU." - Ubisoft.

Yeah, Blizzard is not the only company that's taking bad decisions.

And I'm still debating whether Diablo 3 is worth it or not! They just sell the same stuff as before, with a major graphical changes, but minor gameplay alterations, at a higher price. Since you are FORCED to stay online, I think I'll be playing all the time at 233ms. Just like Starcraft SKIRMISH AGAINST THE AI MAPS.

Also: seriously, equipping an item generates a crash? How did that go unchecked?

    Thanks but no, Blizzard.

Heck, Playstation Network Store won't work anywhere in South America, people. You gotta make an account where it says you reside somewhere else; but will only take credit cards from that place. So, in my case, is BestBuy digital PSN cards or bust.

I'm sure alot of people know about my opinions on the gaming industry so I doubt I have to explain myself to much. I really do feel that the industry is going to end up crashing itself, in how long I can't really say, it could be months, years, or decades.

One thing I have not brought up is that I don't feel there is a (and if there is not good enough) system in place to smack them upside the head when they are doing something that is blatently stupid (also Hollywood could use this system). If a company could be shown where to draw the line it may boost the industry back into glory.

I also feel that publishers and developers need to be seperated and stay for the most part out of each others buisness. Believe it or not, publishers actually get all up into developers stuff if they own them. For example, EA likes to boss DICE around on what they are going to do with Battlefield. Now I'm not an expert so I don't know how frequently it happens, but it's there and it happens. Heck I remember reading long ago even the console folk (MS, Sony for sure, Nintendo maybe) will get involve in a project for their systems, although supposedly only for setting up the achivements/trophies.

One final point is that some employees are just treated badly and in turn a game gets made badly. Did you know EA has had a class action lawsuit in 2004 because they treat their employees badly?

I do think that's enough from me, I have other things to deal with currently.

Planetside 2 Pre-Alpha Studeo Only build. Basically, this game is so early into development the full Alpha doesn't even exist, and it looks better than almost every other game on the market at this stage. My life will end with this game.

Capcom and Ubisoft I mostly ignore, a lot of the bigger companies these days I ignore outside of a few groups.

TOR is Star Wars: The Old Republic, made by Bioware. It was a Star Wars clone of World of Warcraft, and did poorly because of that. A lot of hardcore Star Wars fans like myself also got really displeased with their poor treatment of the Lore, it was almost as bad as Star Wars The Clone Wars.

Hey Komrad, better Red than Dead. big grin

Plus there is the new Elder Scrolls MMO on the way which is being developed by Bethesda's parent Company. It takes a huge **** on the lore and uses the story of Oblivion, with the mechanics of World of Warcraft. It's going to fail as well, essentially it will be a worse version of TOR.
