    I was reading through a hands-on preview this morning, and one of the concerns the writer had was that players can now warp between fires right from the start of the game.  Not being able to do this in Dark Souls sort of compelled you to get to know the areas well.  Think this new feature is a good thing, or a bad thing?

    no one's forcing you to use the warp. Those who use it exclusively may miss out on things, it's their choice to make, and their loss to accept.
    I for one will only warp once I know for certain I've explored every inch between areas.
    An example, on a second or third or etc playthrough I would like to warp right away so I can make my builds faster without needing to work towards the ability to warp. It's a nice little time saver, and as for those who abuse it... their loss.

    I stand by this decision.

    Good to see an old friend from the Demon's Souls Playstation Boards! As far as the warping right away, meh. Wil have to wait and see how it works out.

    I probably sounded like a bit of a tw@ in my first post, unintentionally, but I cant see why you wouldnt want to explore everywhere and find your way around the world on foot, at least for the first few playthroughs.

    Admittedly, after youve cleared it numerous times it might come in handy, but i think randomly warping between areas simply detaches you from the sense that youre on a journey.

    It would not matter to me. I will go through every nook and cranny of the game like I always do. The warping will just be to travel back and forth for PvP and if I miss something.

    I think the warping feature will stay as it seems like a fairly obvious way to increase the games accessibility, i just hope it isnt forced upon us.

    Nah if anything we will have to find something to warp with and still find the bonfire first.

    Warping you have to remember is only between bonfires you've been to, and only a certain number.

    Even with warping, people naturally will explore areas first, then once they know the area and have got lazy then they'll use the warping feature

    Thats a terrible arguement. What is available affects the atmosphere, and choosing to walk everywhere and being forced to walk everywhere provide different experiences. Having that fallback cheapens the journey, wether its used or not.

    hmm, dunno, its pure speculation but I think they might open up a decent number of areas quite early on in an attempt to make it more accessible. A lot of players quit because they couldnt get past a certain point so giving them an option to try somewhere else keeps them in the game longer.

    If that is the case then I think its a real shame, the fun and the sense of achievement is in exploring and getting over the obstacles put in front of you, and like forum said it affects the atmosphere and experience hugely, but hopefully we can just bypass the warping option if thats the case.

    you still have to walk everywhere... it just speeds up the process once you've already done it. As in, you don't need to pick up the lordvessel (equivalent) before you can warp.
    I mean, do you avoid getting the lordvessel for as long as possible to avoid "cheapen"ing the experience?

    The lord vessel is only to specific bonfires (which are spaced fairly far appart except in anor londo), and its not available untill halfway through the game. There is still a lot of tracking and backtracking to be done to get anywhere or do anything even once you have it, for example sens, the depths (i think), blight town, new londo and the forest are all devoid of warp fires untill the boss falls, meaning you have to walk through the whole thing every time you want to do anything there before then and most of the time you want to find a merchant or farm after that.

     unless 2 is 3 times the size of 1 with the same number of bonfires, then it will have essentially the same problem as fast travel does in skyrim in that it trivialises the size of the world and undermines the need to know it well to get anywhere, because once you've found it you can just teleport there and back.

    You can warp between bonfires from the very beginning of the game – as long as you’ve already visited them, of course.

    I like this concept because, I look at pve. If you are doing a run with friends, or you wanna phantom, it's a faster way of getting back to start of last level and your buddy doesn't have to sit there scratching himself waiting for you to walk all the way back.
    Also, let's look at it from DkS perspective. How many of you have made it to anor, wishing you could upgrade your +5 weapon to a +10 but didn't have the ores at the right time. This way you warp back to blk smith, then back to anor to use your new +10 to defeat O&S

    Exactly, it undermines the significance of the choice of when, and if, you should move on to an area you may not yet be prepared for.

    this is more of a list of reasons NOT to open the game up early on. . .

    there arent any hard and fast rules, but the first playthrough should be raw, lonely and hard work and the atmosphere should be untouched. . . anything that makes the game easier simply detracts from the core mechanism that makes DS such a piece of work. .

    eminusx can you explain how? The only difference between this and the warping we have now is, you can warp earlier. You can't start a new game and go warping. You have to light the bf first.
    After watching a vid posted bout the 4 builds in DkS2, I saw wut looked like guy climbing down a ladder and jumping off as if ladder was too short. If that's the case, i'd rather want to warp back if there's no way of back tracking through that area. Giving us the option of warping early does not make the game easier. How is it easier if you killed the boss and you walk all the way back to beginning not fighting anything because you already killed everything. No difference other than a waste of time imo.

    My opinion is that it will not affect the gameplay negatively. Yui Tanimura said it can only be done after finding the bonfires.. Even if some bonfires are lit from the start, it is nothing new to the soul series, which always presented the player with different routes from the get go. Don't forget the demon's souls ''format'' which is kind of similar except you can walk from the Nexus to, say, the shrine of storms..

    Also important, with warping comes respawning..

     I agree with you except for the fact that I rather enjoy falling into the rabbit hole with the only backtracking options being either a long and strenuous fight or death.. That's why I'm very curious as to how the homeward bone mechanic will come into play..
