Money-grubbing Sony
I heard they're going to be implementing a rule where they won't allow players to play used games on their consoles. What gives?

As someone who hasn't even bought a new release game first hand in the past 2 years, i'm pretty shocked about this one.. have you got proof? cus i doubt whether they'd be doing something like that if microsoft wasn't gonna go ahead annd do the same thing

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
Oh god i don't even need to read this.. I've heard all about the next generation everything being done in a steam-like manner too.. though i dunno why they think it's okay to *** over every gaming shop in the world just to avoid people getting games sony gets no money for.
I think it would be nothing short of suicidal if sony did that.. i'd really have to reconsider where my loyalties stand, ever since i was a kind i've used sony consoles, but if this kind of feature was implemented, i'd have little choice but to boycott.
I'm gonna be a goddam student for the next 5 years, I can't afford to buy games at rrp, they're a rip off.

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
I buy some games at launch but not all, I also get a lot of copies of my games used.
For example: If the 360 had this patent I wouldn't have been able to play Dark Souls - got that used.
I think Sony would be making a grave mistake if they followed through with something like this. I just hope Microsoft isn't stupid enough to go along with it thinking it's a good idea.

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
haha, yeah i got dark souls used, though i've since lost a copy of dks and bought a new one (though my old disc was posted back to me so i have 2 copies lol), and i've also bought demons souls new and the dks dlc, so i think I've given From an appropriate amount of money for a game i've played for.. i don't even know how long anymore, probably something like well over 500 hours, and demons has given me another good 60-70 hours too
i really hope they don't do this. The other concern is making it like steam, it would be so bad. Not being able t borrow games off mates, buy games cheap when they're not new anymore.. would hit the industry so hard! and sony and microsoft think they got it bad now...

I hope sony says that its what they're doing just to get microsoft to do it, then they launch without having done it. (I don't like microsoft, if you hadn't guessed)

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
Terrible decision, this is.
And for the record: I support From. Bought the DLC the first hour it became available on the XBL Marketplace. I'll also be purchasing DkS2 new for full price. You have to understand I was hearing so much about this game (some of it bad) so I wasn't sure about purchasing it and since I had no DeS experience I was put off.
But at a discount, used, I was able to give it a try and fell in love with it. From would never have had me as a consumer if this patent was already in action.
EDIT: Forum, these are two companies backed by an army of lawyers. I doubt Microsoft would fall for a childish game of chicken, and I doubt that Sony thinks they would.

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
I wasn't criticising! even if i'm a fan i don't buy a game unless it's a reasonable price, though for souls even if they sold it at 60 instead of 40 pounds i'd buy it, you just get so much game time out of it.
I think i still would have had dark souls if i couldn't play it on the cheap preowned. The first thing I saw of it was a 5 star review in my saturday news paper, and the comments about it intrigued me. Crushing difficulty, pure gameplay experience, an engrossing and beautiful world and the fact it's so different and revolutionary compared to other games, it harked back to old days of gaming with it's unrelenting offering of challenge. I was sold the moment i lay eyes on that review, guess there's something in there that other casual gamers like me can find interesting

This. Exactly this. I've been a Sony customer ever since Ps1, but I'd highly consider switching over to something else if they actually did this. I think they must know that a lot of us would too. Being in business is about making the customer happy. That's how you make money. Nonsense like this does just the opposite. That being said I don't think Sony would do something quite so silly as to alienate all of their customers who don't have the money to buy all their games new. Especially considering how easy it would be to just jump ship to one of their competitors who don't do these things

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
What's truly unfortunate is that they sort of have already started the ball rolling on ps3. I'm not sure if other companies have been doing this too or not, because I don't have any other systems, but I've been noticing more and more when I buy newer video games, with online aspects, used, that you'll have to purchase an online pass separately because the original owner activated the one that came with the game already. I'm yet to actually pay for an online pass, and I don't think any one else should either. That whole thing is paving the way to something more serious, like all this.

Yeah well seeing as there's reports the next Xbox won't have a disc drive, I'm not getting my hopes up about any of this next gen crap.

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
Correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it, consoles are sold at a loss and the console makers make all their money off of licensing fees for games sold on their consoles. So if Sony alienates all their "customers" who buy used games, tell me again: what have they lost?PlasticandRage wrote:Being in business is about making the customer happy. That's how you

Because everyone either buys all their games exclusively new or exclusively used. There aren't people who have a bit of both.

I'm not aware of that being their business model. Doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me. Even if that were the case, they'd lose customers by doing it, and losing customers means losing money, even if the majority of their income were to come from licensing. If nobody is buying things that they're selling, there eventually won't be money for them to produce anything. Eventually developers would stop producing games for their systems as well. I don't know all the details, but Nintendo certainly saw something to that degree happen when they put out the N64. In the generation before that a majority of developers made games for SNES, but then when PS1 came out they all jumped ship and went over to Sony. I could list all kinds of game developers that started series on Nintendo platforms that now make games from those same series either exclusively for Sony, or did before the Wii came out.

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
Less players also equals less of a community and for an industry that's becoming more and more online-focused that's a bad deal whichever way you slice it.
You're also forgetting that Sony doesn't have a monopoly on video games, people do have other options and if they feel squeezed out by a company they have all the freedom in the world to go to a competitor.

Re: Money-grubbing Sony
Plastic: the reason you have to buy an online pass separately is because Sony and the game creators don't see a dime of the money you give to Gamestop(or any other retailer) when you buy a used game.
Gamestop actually got in trouble for this a while back, they'd sell a used game for 50(54 or something plus tax) and then the buyer would have to get an online pass separately for another 10. Pretty much, the buyer would end up paying the same amount for a used game.
Gamestop now includes online codes(which I'm guessing they pay the game companies for) on their receipts for used games. Though I've heard that they don't do it consistently.
Edit: I'm guessing Sony is having a similar thoughts about used games. They don't see any of the profit from them, so why should they allow them?

its pretty aparent too that the age of hardcopies (cds, movies, game discs) is gradually coming to a close... having everything done digitally saves time, money, and space... it was only a matter of time really.

Yep. time to retreat to the PC and let the consoles die a sad death. I miss the way you used to be playstation. back when your graphics were hilarious and your games were quirky.
