Spears anyone?

Just noticing that for weapon recommendations, nobody seems to have mentioned spears so far. I have been playing entirely offline, but I have found spears to be one of my favorite types of weapon. Why does it seem that they are so rarely used?

I *** loved the lightning spear during my first playthrough but now I think it is kinda cheap to hide behind a big *** shield and poke the enemies to death.

No idea why. I don't use them myself, but that's just cuz i'm adicted to the black knight sword :o
I must say, one anoying aspect about spears is their tiny hitbox. Simply walking to the side can dodge it.

Because spears are cheap both in PvE and PvP...sure if you want to remove the challenge of the game go for it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

if it works, is it cheap or just effective?

i don't use spears very often because i prefer the estoc to do my poking when a good poking is called for.

They're Just Cheap. You can poke at enemies with a Greatshield covering you so they have No way of Dealing any ''Damage'' (Pyromancy works but not 100%) and if they use a Stamina recovery Item (Grass) or Miracle they can stay there the Entire Fight. (AND I DIDEN'T TALK ABOUT THE SILVER KNIGHT SPEAR.)

(Sorta Off-Topic) Rapiers can do the same thing but They got MUCH. Lower range and You don't use Rapiers with Greatshields.

Spears are pretty cool, though I never liked the animation of the shield poke. Same with the Rapier class weaps. It just looks stupid, I think; there's no force behind it at all. In my opinion spears are meant to be 2-handed only.

Not sure why some people consider them cheap. More than likely they have trouble against them in PvP?

if a spear is played correctly they are 100% impossible to beat in PvP except agianst another spear. let me explain.

you are using the weapon with the LONGEST reach in the game, Spears also attack very fast with very little recoil.

Step 1. ONLY attack at max range (you can not be parried at max range, and they can't hit you either)
Step 2. Never press R1 more then once (if you press it more then once it allows some one to close the distance gap)
Step 3: ALWAYS roll away after you attack once. (this ensures you are max distance the whole fight)

follow those 3 steps and you will never get hit by any weapon, because one one will get close enough to you.

Huh. I've never felt spears were all that special, whether I was using one or fighting one. In one of TKing's vids he fought a really good spear user with his Tarkus and beat him.

I remember the first day I used a spear in PvP, I was doing really well, but then one guy quick-swapped to his Eagle Shield and just sat behind it till I got so frustrated I went at him hard... and lost.

That's kind of dumb. Almost anything when played perfect can be
impossible to beat. We are humans, we make mistakes. And I could dodge
you all the time with that spear. Same as you could dodge anything I say
to counter turtles with spears because you're supposedly playing
perfectly, covering the holes of using a spear.

Dark Magic can wreck people who turtle, unless they're using a Stone Greatshield or Havel's Greatshield. Don't know about the above but I myself have found spears difficult to use properly in pvp, they can often have poor tracking and it seems if your opponent is experienced enough they can just sidestep every thrust, also without a buff they do little damage and in pvp when you often don't have the time to whittle your opponent down before they bs, parry, or straight out break your guard.

They can be very effective however become outclassed by an opponent who knows their flaws. And then if there's lag...

^I believe that if you follow Glutebrah's suggestions, you'll probably have some pretty awesome success.

Then again, without the challenge, what is the point of Dark Souls?

I don't see how using a spear is considered cheap. I have been using the silver knight spear a lot recently and I still get beat. However… turtling behind a greatshield isn't very fun to deal with. Two-handing spears with 0 poise is the way to go in my opinion.

follow my steps and you won't get hit, and won't get beat, unless lag is bad and they are closer then they appear on your screen

There's no reason you should be beaten using a spear in PvP. They mess with every playstyle and are nearly impossible to punish. Good spear users are nigh-impossible to beat. And it doesn't take much practice to get good with a spear. I don't feel like I've earned the victory when I win with a spear, and for good reason.

If theY whip out their spear I'll just whip out my bow and shoot some arrows their way.

If you can't beat them, out-range them.

Bows are so easy to Dodge by just side rolling

Spears aren't cheap, they are just easier to master using because they have a simple moveset and obvious advantages.

Turtlers might have a great defense, but they have a weak offense. If you are solely melee and you cant get past it, just sit back and make them come to you. Magic, bleed, toxin, all beat turtlers. For every strength in DKS there is something to counter it.



Probably 90% of my PVP victories come from me using the other players impatience against him. People think that they have to attack relentlessly and don't take time to consider their opponet and environment. It is the same as the boss fights, unless you are grossly overleveled if you go in in a big rush you will make mistakes and die. You have be willing to take your time and be patient.

If you change this idea of "spears are impossible to beat" into "spears have a strong defense", then when you do beat them you will feel good about it.

I agree. Spears are like anything else. They can be powerful in the right hands, but have weaknesses that can be exploited by someone who knows what they're doing. All the spell schools have anti-turtle abilities, and, as tBTM stated above, status ailments work well. They can be parried just as easily as anything else if you're any good at parrying. etc etc. I happen to like using spears for some specific build types.
