The spearman charges up the stairs as you go down them. Amazingly you dodge (Seriously, you needed a 4 or lower), and he goes sailing by you. He is now above you on the stairs.

You sidestep the charging warrior and slam your blade into his back, While backstabs do not work on enemies that know you're there, the force of the blow sends him into a wall. While he's not dead, he's out cold, and it's reasonable to assume you won't be around when he comes to.
