You can't parry like in PvE because of lag. With most weapons, you have to parry before the opponent starts to attack to account for lag. That's called a blind parry. You can also parry an opponent's second hit by blocking the first, and parrying just when the first ends. You should look on Youtube for some guides to parrying in pvp. At the top of the threads in the forum should be "resource threads for rookies and vets", that has a thread within it that will teach you how to parry.

Check out jblackmel's channel on youtube. He has a couple videos uploaded about parrying, I think parrying instructions 102 and 103? He uploads lots of quality PvP videos and pulls off some sick parries in them as well.

Get Rhea aggro'd, unarm your weapons, and practice. She does little to no damage.

Is it just the timing you need help with, or general tactics?

You don't need to parry to be a great fighter. To me, it's a gimmick because of lag. Lag varies by player, so while you could parry a claymore on 1 player, maybe you can't parry 1 that it's wielded by a different player.

I've practiced with a white phantom and I've noticed that the timing is a bit different than against an invader. I think there's less lag between you and the phantom than you and the invader, so it might not be that helpful to summon a guy to practice with. I'd use the RSS and just unequip weapons.

Practicing with PvE parrying won't help much. In fact, it can mess up your timing. The timing is different in PvP. The best way is to go out and do it. Set up duels to practice and learn timings for various weapons. Watch YouTube videos that show the different timings. Like this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YQ1TdfV_ZU&feature=plcp

EWGF and Peeve have some good YT videos as well.

Try it with base unupgraded weapons, to make sure you don't kill each other.

That's the best way to learn though. Get a bunch of weapon classes. Practice timed parries. Like for a Uchi. Let the first hit connect (no blocking). Press R2 at the same time the first hit connects, and you'll parry the second hit.
