Post by swordiris on Sun Jul 29, 2012 2:31 am

You can't rely on PvE timing. It is way different. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the parry windows for the parry dagger. But, a key point to parrying is know the weapons you are trying to parry. Each weapon has a unique window to parry them.

I'm using a mail breaker in Demon's now (practicing in Demon's because smaller community to watch me get my *** kicked until I get hang of it.). I'll do on Dark Souls once I get the timing down. but parrying daggers or Falchions seems like luck when you add the lag its frustrating.

Parrying timing is probably different in DeS compared to DkS. And, lag does make it harder. But, it is possible, not relying on luck. The key is to study your opponent's habits and patterns. Then, predict their next move and parry them.

I heard parrying was made sligtly easier in DkS so if I figure it out in DeS I will be even better at it. I managed to parry one falchion user in Demon's. Would have felt proud but didn't win match.

The issue is the timing window, you'll find yourself parrying too late in Dark if you get used to Demon's, you'll want to practice in Dark to get used to Dark's system.

    But Dark has gestures.....

Oh well if someone sends me hatemail my line will be "You get the balls to rock a parry build and Become a master at it then you can call me a bad player."

That will shut up most of the sore winners

Unless I beat you, because I mostly kill with ripostes. silly

But I wouldn't insult you or think less of you for dying for practicing something anyway. Your best bet is to summon a friend, and have them use unupgraded weapons as you get the parry timing down. I might be able to help you out depending on your system and SL.

I do have something around that level which can summon in certain spots, so I should be able to help you out. I'm going to sleep in a bit, but some time tomorrow after my company leaves, I'm completely free.

Might be busy tomorrow (or today since it is really late).

Was vegged out and my parents want me to barbecue with the family.

Don't use the parrying dagger. If you mess up, you're screwed.

I'd say don't use the parrying dagger because it's too obvious. Just screams "I'm going to try and parry you"... Then your opponent will change his behavior (probably go right for the backstab). I love parrying with off-hand weapons (Notched Whip, mostly), or just bare handed.

The best way to parry is like Tolvo said: watch your opponent, look for patterns, and exploit those. A lot of people will rely on the same moves frequently--especially roll-R1s and backstep-R1s/ running-R1s. Those are the easiest to punish. It's also important to be familiar with the movesets of every weapon. Know what types of attack they have (horizontal or vertical slashes, thrusts, etc.) and their range, and what people are most likely to abuse or what you can exploit best for a parry.

Another thing you can do is learn tricks to bait people into attacking you. Throwing empty attacks is a good one (attack when you're too far to hit or get backstabbed, and your opponent will rush in to punish you for the whiff, at which point you can parry), cancelling spells, pulling back an arrow on your bow then switching it out for an empty hand and parrying, using chameleon, etc. You can come up with tricks yourself to bait your opponents!

It's also a good idea to switch between 1-handing and 2-handing your main weapon. That way you might catch your opponent off guard and pull off an easy parry on him. (Example: invade with your weapon 2-handed, and when your opponent spams R1 without fear of getting parried, 1-hand your weapon and parry.)

Finally: 0.5 seconds. That's roughly how much earlier you need to parry in PvP than you do in PvE!
