Counter to "Battle Mages"?

I am having some trouble when dealing with: “Battle Mages”! You know, the guys using Soulmass, Crystal Spear, Wrath of Gods, and/or whatever crank attack magic.



I can roll / dodge some of their spells… probably not long enough…?! I can’t imagine to dodge all the shots such Battle Mages has!



I hate that magic deals a lot of damage through my shield! So I wanna know how to reduce exactly this magic damage so I can hit them with my weapon OR in general: how to deal with Battle Mages?



Great Magic Barrier is ineffective. Because it fades out far too fast!!!

I am wearing a little mix of Giant’s and Havels Armor; I would like to keep my armor, but if changing this is the best way to counter Magic, I would want to switch....



Is Tranquil Walk of Peace an option? So I can hit the Battle Mage effectively with a melee weapon?

Crest shield and roll bs. Mages usually have either low hp or low end so keep up the pressure and stay close to run out their stamina, then mince them with melee and roll bs punish any attempt to cast.

Crest shield for sure. Try subbing one piece of your armour for something with higher mag res. Use the environment to block their attacks. Also be aware that lag will mean their attacks are actually just ahed of where they are so dodge early.

I will keep Crest Shield handy, to switch my Eagle Shield when facing a mage.

Still, I will try if TWOP can also help me.

Just dont use TWOP to BS. Hitting them normally is fine but BSing is cheap.

I'd prefer you didn't use TWoP at all. If they whip out an MLGS you're toast and it's a majorly lame tactic.

It could help him start out. Sorta like training wheels. Besides TWOP only has a bad name for BSes. If used for attacking normally and running away (as it was meant to be) its fine.

I dunno. I'm incredibly biased against it, but I've never seen it been used for a relatively fair purpose. If you do just poke once or twice I suppose it's alright, but as soon as you can please stop using it.

See thats the thing. Its never used as intended so everyone hates it. The fishers have ruined the spells image.

Exactly! It's not used as it's intended to be.... But this thematic leeds to a huge discussion! I mean, there are Fight Club rules, but I found out they only apply for organised battles. You can't expect players to know these FC rules -> Usually only a minority of players are active or even reading on a Forum!

Hey yesterday, I had this Invader spamming me with WOG in Demons Ruin where I couldn't escape!!!!! I asked him why he uses this cheap tactic. He answered because everyone is using it............ Damn Lemming!! Next time he invaded me, I jumped off a cliff!

For me, honor is more important than winning in Dark Souls. I am getting used to enemies with cheap tactics! unfortunately... Because there is no button for "Hara-kiri" I need to keep my honor....

I dont use Intel baised toons but I had a guy who used Magic barrier to great effect on me.

I used a gravelord Great sword dance and it did like 20 dmg on him.

I wonder does the Magic barrier negate darkmoon blade users.

and does it stack with the crest shield so that you could tank mages.

GMB is awesome for that and it last about a min(?) more than enough time to kick theire ***, teyre spells will barely scratch you.

Wiki says that GMB lasts for 40 seconds. While fighting, it's a pretty short duration...!!! I am not sure if it holds off Darkmoon Blade, but most likely should reduce ALL Magic damage. GMB does stack with shield!

and it pretty much cnacels dmb(not slb) and 40 secs is more than enough time to kill someone, unless its in the forest and theyre running away from you.

Cool thats awesome since I can scare the crap out of some of those MLGS/ CSS users by hardly taking any dmg.

I haven't had trouble with battle mages for a long time, even if they got the moonlight great sword and the dusk crown plus all that amount of spells. Best trick is to be quick and stay close to him so the Spears can't reach you. Soul mass just flip/roll to the side (very easy to dodge). And their vit and stamina runs out fast so if you have a good armor/poise you can be hit by the 2 handed greatsword without being stunned. If you want the other way go with Crest Shield, but personally I find it difficult and slow, but that's the option against multiple battle mages.

I havent had trouble with mages either at least when there by themselves however when you have 2 spamming MLGS R2 and souls spears ect it becomes overwhelming if they are even half decent players. while the Great magic barrier and crest shield should even up the playing field.

In my experience, the absolute best counter against casters is pressure. Like the guys said, a lot of them have low endurance, so dodging your attacks is only an option for a little bit. Most of them wont cast if you're constantly on their **** 'cause you'll just poop on them during their cast and dodge the attack. Just be wary when you're sprinting in because you'll end up jumping instead of dodging attacks. I've jumped directly into plenty of Soul Spears. Haha.

I was hosting in the burg a few weeks ago against a caster, I sprinted at him for the kat sprinting r1. Jumped right into a CSS that OHKO'd me.

On the topic of Great Magic Barrier. If you see someone cast Darkmoon Blade, immediately use it. Especially if their weapon is weak (like a rapier) you can tank and destroy them. It's also very effective against wog spamming.

Use vow of silence. And if it doesn't last long enough use the lingering dragon crest ring.
