Need help with Greatswords and those pesky Mages ^^

Post by Dandy Dude on Fri Apr 19, 2013 9:09 pm

    heyho

first of all im kinda new to pvp (in theory im pretty advanced but im not able to put most of it into action xD).

now concerning my problem with greatswords and in general: what do i do against "evasive" players

especially "evasive" mages ? it's hard to get even 1 hit in and

if im too aggressive im getting blown up by 1 dark bead and if im too defensive they

spam me with their "laggy hypermode fairy ear magic of all sorts" with one hit to death

(im not really complaining but it's strange to see both my stamina and health bar completely deplete after a dodge with no indication of being hit... and should i be able to survive for some wonderous reasons, at that point even a punch will do the trick -.-)

if someone could share some tips to tackle those situations, be it with greatswords or

tips in general i appreciate the help

(sidenote: the only magic i ever use are pyromancies if any at all and im aware of the crest shield, which is not that effective for those situations IMO even if it's designed to block magic)

thanks in advance and sorry for the long post

To beat a skilled mage, one must become a skilled mage...

...or use Strong Magic Shield. Crest Shield is not as strong as people make it out to be.

Then of course there's faith build that know how to use Great Magic Barrier.

The best ring combo, imo, is the DWGR/Hornets combined with a rapier or a dagger.

To make a long story short, every build has a weakness.

a bow(if you can use it) is really good against cassters, if you go up against one and you fast roll switch to the dwgr and kite them.

You're unfortunate to have lag problems and there's no a whole lot you can do about that, but I've had some success in the past against casters by equipping a spear in the left hand and a sword in the right (you've got plenty of choice about what sort of weapon you can have in your right hand, I tend to go for a claymore since it balances the spear's pokes nicely).

If you have decent endurance, use a wolf ring and wear armour with good magic defence (black sorcerer's, black leather etc). Fast rolling is a must. With that setup you can chip away at them from a good distance and if they close in you've got a nice powerful weapon in your right hand to punish them with! (for extra flexibility you can also equip your pyro flame too)

so... in the end poking them to death is the way to go?

time to lvl all the way up to 100, equip the dwgr+leo and poke them with a spear and arrows until they die or run away... oh well

If you don't fancy poking then you could always use magic barrier or gmb, whack on full havel's with a chaos zweihander and let them have it! Another strategy would be to go in aggressively, you're always vulnerable at medium range against casters but they like to put time and space between you. If you can stay on top of them with a weapon that can either dead angle or cause bleed you can put them under huge pressure and either stop them casting outright or punish them if they attempt it (if you're going to do this you'll want green blossom for your stamina and either mask of the child or grass crest shield).

Tips vs greatswords: Try to learn the timing to parry them. It's one of the easiest weapons to parry.

Tips vs magic: As soon as you see a catalyst/flame/talisman, go completely on the defensive. Keep your shield up and always be ready to dodge. If you keep your focus you should be able to dodge around until they run out of casts.
