    The Ballad of the Newbie

Post by MrBeefy3 on Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:22 pm

Hey there guys, completely new to the "Souls" series.

So far I'm enjoying it, so far managed to take down the Taurus Demon, Bell Gargoyles and I'm currently stuck on the Moonlight Butterfly.

My main problem atm (apart from being new) is I seem to clumsily throw my weapon around. What I mean is, I was using a Battle Axe fine for ages, then I started increasing my dex and strength so I could use the Gargoyle Axe, I got the stats up but when I equip either of the axes I sort of stagger as I use them, I used to be able to get weak combos with the Battle axe but now I swing once and I stumble.

I tried out a Broadsword just to see if it would work and it works fine :x I have the minimum stats for the Gargoyle Axe and above minimum for the Battle Axe yet neither of them seem to be functioning properly.

Please help, I've been using axes ever since I found one and my Battle Axe has been upgraded, I planned to upgrade the Gargoyle Axe but I don't see the point if I'm just flailing around like a level 1 Magikarp.

My main question is how much damage are you doing when you strike an enemy with the Gargoyle axe?

What are your stats? You need 14 strength and 14 dex to wield the gargoyle axe one-handeda and only 10 strength to two-hand it. Keep in mind that dex does not increase when holding a weapon with two hands, so you MUST get your dex to 14

Haven't used axe's for a while but I think you "stumble" if you miss with your swing. If you attack hits it's target you should recover faster.

If hes staggering as hes hitting enemies, his damage is probably no greater than that of your fists

Well see I was wondering if it was merely animation or if he is actually staggering after each hit, the damage amount would verify one or the other.

I'm hitting 38 one handed with normal attack, strong attack is 59.

    I've got 17 strength and 14 dexterity

Undead skeletons at the tower where the Gargoyle's were, not the big knights just standard undead skeletons, my Battle Axe is hitting way more though, I don't get it :c As I said before I used to be able to do a combo of like 3 weak attacks, now I do one week attack and stumble unless I use a weapon like a sword, the Morning Star makes me stumble too.

    My starter class is Knight

I genuinely can't play my finger on this one, any others have any ideas? I was thinking possibly it was the Gargoyle Halberd, but I think he has the stats for that as well. Are you using the weapon in a tight space and hitting the walls maybe?

I used my Battle Axe +2 on the Skeletons, weak attack is 117 :/ I'm stumped, still no combo. Even if I'm in an empty room and swing my weapon he stumbles to the left.

Well that is the animation for the Gargoyle Axe, your character will do that with the proper stats. The damage numbers just don't sound right to me though.

Yeah it's only 38 :s It should be doing 93 or something, do you need to do anything to like, unlock the weapon's potential or something? Take it to someone or?

No you don't, and you said the Undead Soldiers around the Parish right? Because they have very little armor, hmm, this makes no sense to me.

Yep it's them, my Battle Axe +2 is doing the correct damage, I notice when I swing the Gargoyle Tail Axe like a poison bar comes up, does that need to be maxed out for it to do the damage?

I'm wondering if I should just give up on axes. Swords work fine for me, a Halberd makes me near enough trip up and my best weapon, the Gargoyle Tail Axe isn't doing the correct damage. Should I just change to a 1 hand sword and shield?

Well the Longsword does have a great animation set, as well if you upgrade it, it's a really reliable weapon. I PvP with one sometimes and I've got to say it has my favourite move set.

Got a shortsword, longsword, broadsword, claymore (even if I equip that 2 hand I can get a 3 weak swing combo) or balder side sword.

Which ever one you recommend I'll use but it's gotta be powerful, I have no ranged stuff and I gotta take down the Moonlight Butterfly, been stuck on it the last 3 days silly

I heard there's a witch in the bush or something you can summon but I doubt I could summon her because the stone golem just before the entrance to the butterfly kills me if I try to take it out, I have to run past it and into the white wall

Yeah at the bottom of the stairs there is Beatrice, you can summon here if you are human, her sign is hidden underneath a bush under the stairs.

For the Moonlight butterfly without ranged abilities and from those choices? I'd say Claymore, upgrade it a bit, and since Str is your highest stat it should scale better and deal more damage. You'll have to wait for when it lands, as well if you see energy gathering around its head get ready to back off before a magic explosion. If you can I would suggest buying a bow from the undead merchant, upgrading it a bit, and buying large arrows to hit it while it is in the air.

Humanity can be gained from killing rats, or enemies in an area while the boss is still alive. The Undead Merchant is near the bonfire with the ladder leading up to the bridge with the Wyvern. There is a large square area with two shield and spear wielding soldiers, down the stairs there and to the left is the undead merchant who sells a lot of useful items.

I understand where you mean when you say the bridge with the Wyvern. I only know that the bonfire is just across the bridge and I know half way along the bridge there is steps that lead under it, that's all

Under that bridge there is a doorway that leads to an earlier bonfire. Do not go down the steps in this room, there is a ladder right by your feet upon entering, interact with it to kick it down and now you have a shortcut. The bonfire at the bottom of the ladder is the one near to the undead merchant. The Bonfire past the gate on the bridge leads to the Altar, as well unless you are willing to try some tricks to get past the Wyvern it really isn't necessary unless you want use Faith spells.

Well I'll look for him later, I have the blacksmith for now, I got past the Wyvern somehow anyway, I just legged it, he breathed fire into the room a few times then flew off. Upgraded my Claymore to +3 and I can use it 1 hand while using a shield which is handy cos I thought it was a 2 handed weapon
