Yes, but like he said, I'd imagine the west's views on animation as a kids' medium will prevent that from happening. Anime, and by extension animation as a whole, already has evolved into a medium that's willing to tackle any subject under the sun. If tomorrow, that "kids' only" bias disappeared, I think anime would go "mainstream" immediately. But that won't happen, and until it does it won't catch on with the western public.

As another note, I feel the popularity of Pacific Rim showed that the western mainstream audience is willing to accept and appreciate the common styles and tropes used in anime, and it just further points to the idea that the medium being under "animation" is really what's holding it back.

I don't really watch a lot of anime, because I've never really like that form of media in itself. I read a lot of manga and visual novels though.

Yes. But having read all 5 books, I was a little dissapointed.
It's a good movie though. As are all movies directed by Miyazaki (I'm not talking about Hidetaka. i'm talking about Hayao, and his son Goro.)

Its not a bad movie, its not amazing but its not bad, I dont see how it got a 'Worst Movie' award in Japan and how Goro got 'Worst Director'.

That's precisely what i was saying. The thing i was dissapointed about was how unfaithful yhe movie was to the books.
I gotta say. Hayao's movies are in a whole different league from anything Goro has made. Goro's stuff is good. But he just can't touch Hayao.

I really liked Full Moon wo Sagashite, Happiness!, and Ouran.

Quick guys, I'm trying to prove to a friend that modern anime isn't all just moe and loli pandering.  Help me compile a list of shows the last 1-2 years that are serious shows and that aren't fanservice-y or moe!

I've already thought up Attack on Titan and Steins;Gate. So those are already on the table, but I need more before I make a convincing case.

Well some anime that is just good media in general would have to be (in no particular order): Stand Alone Complex, Baccano!, Darker Than Black, Clannad (kind of, mostly the second season because then you understand why the first season was ultra moe), Arakawa Under the Bridge, Elfen Lied, Fooley Cooley, Electromagnetic Girlfriend, From the New World, Gurren Lagann (I guess).

You didn't specify a genre so I just went all out.

I just read the part about last 1-2 years. F--- sorry. From the New World ended last winter, I believe.

Oh, just gonna say this, Baccano... Watch Baccano.

Preferably the English Dub, while the Japanese voices are amazing, the English just fits the show a whole lot better.
