Re: Random Off-Topic
NY is home to just about everything. Birds range from tiny and annoying to eagles, with some owls, robins and a bazillion others to boot. We've got small lizards if you know where to look, a decent variety of snakes. I've personally seen a snapping turtle that was close to two feet high. There's been reports of wolves even though they're supposed to have been driven out of the area a long time ago. Bears are pretty common. There's been enough bears actually where there was one in one of the larger cities a couple years back. Around the smaller towns it's pretty common to have someone with a picture in their backyard. The town I live in has three varieties of squirrels. Lots of of small mammals (raccoons, groundhogs, woodchucks, beavers, foxes, coyotes, cougars, bobcats). I could probably go on.

Re: Random Off-Topic
That's a pretty good summary actually. I used to do late night walks around town. "Middle of town" around here is usually a few streets over from "middle of woods." On my late night walks I've come within six inches of stepping on skunks, rabbits and snakes.
I've been within kicking distance of a deer (that one I kinda feel bad about now, since it resulted in a deer death most likely). I've had a bat hiss at me from just a few feet away (one of several funny bat stories). Petted a wild raccon (that chased my brother). Been hit in the leg by a confused bird.
Again, I could likely go on.

Nature is something we aren't exactly blessed with in Britain.
Variety of anything is very low. You'd never find anything you mentioned in the local area. If it involves more nature stories though, you should go on.

Really? Those vapid Romantics would lead you to believe otherwise.

Re: Random Off-Topic
That's true. Good thing I didn't say we pioneered them. I just said that occurred, which it did. According to some books at least....I wasn't there. I would imagine that in reality the Redcoats were a little smarter than standing on the road waiting to get shot too. Guerrilla warfare is more effective the better you know the area generally. So while I simplified the truth a great deal all I really meant is that the colonists employed run and gun tactics more effectively.
As for an animal story, here's the bird one for you Renny™
As for an animal story, here's the bird one for you Renny™
- it's a short one:
- I was lying in bed playing video games one summer during my high school years. My one window was open and the other had plastic over it while it was waiting to be fixed. All of a sudden....WHAM....something hits my leg. A bird had flown in and collided with me. It tries to escape and hits the plastic over the one window and can't figure out it's mistake. It spends a good chunk of time flapping as hard as it can against the plastic until I had to cut a large slit in the pastic so it could get out.

That poor bird! What was it like to actually be there? That sounds like an introduction to another, more interesting, longer story, but it was the whole thing.

Re: Random Off-Topic
That was it for the bird. It flew off after leaving and seemed ok. I think it just panicked and couldn't figure out what it ought to be doing.
The bat story is fairly similar. It was in the house (happened lots of times) and you essentially can't guide them out ever. They don't do escapes well. So usually you try to hit them just enough to stun them (which is easy, they're pretty resilient) and then take them outside away from where cats can find them before they wake up. On this occasion I had it flying in the hall outside my room and hit it. I clipped the wing only so he was hurt and pissed but not out. I walked over to it, where it was crouched, and it stares at me dead in the eyes and hisses like a cat. Now I knew they had teeth but until you're lookiing inside it's mouth you don't really know how many. Even though they're the size of a decent sized mouse, at the time it looked like a million little needles all filled with malice. I got it outside but that's an image I won't forget.
What's up next on Skare's animal story time?
Rat story
A different creepy bat story
How I killed a deer on my bicycle story

Yeah. He used to calm down a lot when he wore his jersey. Seemed to be content. He also did some nice loyal gestures that would make a dog jealous. So the answer is that I have waaaay too many weird animal stories.
