The Metal thread.

Oh hell yes, when I get out of school be prepared for an onslaught of metal bands.

Linkin Park and System of a Down make up 95% of my metal. Coheed and Cambria get 4%, while the rest is miscellaneous.

I need more metal. Plastic provided me with a list of songs/bands in the off topic thread, but alas, I forgot to check them and now I can't be bothered to find the post again.

So, being a big metal fan for at least two decades now I've often heard (far too often) about the "greatness" of one Metallica (they're so mainstream that their band name is not considered incorrect by spell check apparently). You might have noticed that I did NOT include them on my list of recommended bands.

Now, I do not intend to start a war since this can be divisive so I'll just say that I personally enjoy a wide variety of music including the Cardigans and many many non-metal bands. So to hopefully not cause a war on this, I definitely want to add, you like what you like. You're free to like/love/worship Metallica as you see fit.

Now to my point here. I do not like them (some songs from the first few albums are good). Most of this feeling for me is a recognition of how overhyped they are (again in my opinion). I don't see the level of talent other bands have. I don't see the creativity in song writing etc.

I've had this conversation with many friends and acquaintances and of course, loving evidence like I do, always brought up a story to illustrate my point. Here goes:

As many metal fans are aware, Dave Mustaine, founder/frontman/lead heroin addict for Megadeth was also in the lineup for Metallica before they made their debut album. He was justifiably kicked out for his substance abuse and fights (sometimes physical) with bandmates. When he left, he made a request. Don't use my songs. Look at the liner notes for Metallica's first album. They used some of his songs (but did give him credit).

I used to have both of these songs on my phone at all times to illustrate my point:

Exhibit A: Four Horseman by Metallica. Pay close attention to the guitar especially



Exhibit B: Mechanix by Megadeth. Pay even closer attention to the guitar.



Yup. Same guitar pretty much. Some thoughts on this from me. I used to be able to play the entire rhythm part of Four Horsemen along with the song. I have never been able to play along with Mechanix, despite it being near identical. The pacing killed me. Same thing, different talent level entirely. Also, Hetfield often plays rhythm and sings. He is pretty talented actually, I will admit. Mustaine often plays lead and sings. Acknowledged that neither is a terrific singer however. Finally, I have been to concerts for both. I have studied their guitar work live in addition to the recorded tracks as well as their stage presence and overall metal quotient. Hands down, Megadeth is the winner. I would also rate a good number of other artists higher on my list (Rob Zombie and Prong jump out)

My conclusion, while I do believe Metallica is a band of talented individuals who have had some good songs, I place them squarely in the overrated and not recommended by Skarekrow category.

This is real metal

Apart from this ^ master of the voice, i'm not really into metal, Metallica, a bit of Megadeth, some Rammstein...not much else

^ I like old Metallica. I don't really listen to it much anymore, but I still have all of it. Everything before Load, and then even more everything before Cliff Burton died.

Also, you should all go download Austrian Death Machine. It's spectacular. Get anything off Total Brutal. The vocalist from As I Lay Dying plays every instrument recorded separately over Arnold Schwarzenegger impressions for vocals. So awesome. I'll try to find a video.

Plastic...I always expected Cookie Monster was metal. I'm surprised no one came to see why I was laughing in my office. The Trivium one is even more funny since I really like the song he's making fun of.

A plot of my 90 most frequently scrobbled artists in the past 12 months follows. Yes, there's some non-metal stuff on there. Font size is proportional to frequency.

It's just updating your profile at last.fm, a website that keeps track of your music listening habits. Basically you just install their plugin to your Winamp/iTunes/etc. and it will keep a record of everything you listen to (mine goes back to 2006).

They also have an internet radio based on your preferences, which is less popular than Pandora but in my opinion better for metal.
