EDIT: Spend too long typing a post, find thread derailed upon submitting. :|
So...to boil down the thread:
Crown of Dusk - weighs very little and has a greater damage boost with the drawback of severely reducing magical defenses. Carries a high risk/reward factor. Best used only if you think you can avoid getting hit with spells or magic-dealing weapons.
Crown of the Dark Sun - has noticable weight and provides less bonus damage, but does not reduce any of your defenses. A safer pick in general, while it carries less reward it also has less risk. Best used when you're thinking you may not be able to avoid magic damage too well.
On a personal note, no, you are not dumb for thinking the Crown of Dark Sun is pointless, especially when compared to the Crown of Dusk. Most experienced players are confident enough in their dodging skills that they can afford to use the riskier piece of equipment since the benefits it provides become more noticable while the risks become less noticable the greater the player's skill at the game. To a good enough player, the risk of lessened defenses seems almost non-existant since they can simply use good positioning and evasive timing that they've build up through practice to negate it, essentially making it seem like it has no weakness in the mind of the player. Given this, when comparing the two pieces of gear that seemingly have no weaknesses, why not take the one that gives more damage and is lighter?
However, I do not believe that the Crown of Dark Sun is useless. I find it's best use is on a build that expects to take damage as a way to open up spell opportunities; said another way, on tanking caster builds. Manus Catalyst builds that don't spec into Dex or miracle casters who have long startup times on their spells could take the Crown of Dark Sun instead since they don't have the casting speeds of a pure Dex/Int caster and so should be more wary of being punished for example. It's certainly more niche than the Crown of Dusk, but it has it's moments and areas where it is useful.
