Dark Souls II seems like the aftermath of the Dark Lord

Post by Acarnatia on Sun Dec 09, 2012 2:07 am

The world we can see in the trailer seems like a much colder time set Lordran. From the fur coat, atmosphere and rigid ground and high elevations, the game seems to take place at least largely in cold, mountainous regions and high elevations. Many of the images we can see have the ground look grey and cold, almost frozen and snowy or ashy. The setting honestly reminded me a little of Skyrim mixed with Dark Souls.
The name, Dark Souls II, suggests that this game is a sequel to Dark Souls. Many people mistakenly thought Dark Souls was the sequel to Demon's Souls; the new, obvious relationship in the names certainly seems to require one of them to be related in some manner to the other.
This looks like it may be the result of the Chosen Undead from the first Dark Souls game choosing to become the Dark Lord and ending the Age of Fire, (and killing the Lord of Sunlight) leaving the world colder and bleaker in the aftermath. We are shown a very bleak setting that looks like something between the colorless, grey themes portrayed in Demon's Souls and that of the Age of Ancients in Dark Souls, and a world of absolute Dark.
On a side note, I've noticed several people comment about the masks. Similar white masks are depicted often enough in Japanese manga/anime, often pure white or with a few simple, stylized markings. That being an influence is certainly possible being as this is actually a Japanese-made game, and there are already several other Japanese objects in the series. (katanas, Ciaran's white porcelain mask) Such masks are often used on assassin characters or frightening, unknown characters.
As for the dragon-perhaps the ancient stone dragons have left more modern remnants? Or perhaps the new director simply insisted on traditional western dragons-though I note that there is only ONE depicted in the trailer.
So, what are your thoughts regarding this?

I'm kinda hoping they don't pull a Dragon's Dogma and make us fight our old character lol. I mean, it would be awesome, I just don't know if I'de be able to actually do it, I'm pretty connected to my character ._. .

Also, the masks those guys were wearing is the same mask that the statue in the Painted World that opens up the door to Priscilla's fog gate.

I was actually thinking about this and it makes so much sense. The voice says: "You are the undead, forever without hope, forever without LIGHT." Seems like Kaathe tricked us and we end up screwing things up with the Dark Lord ending.

I believe that the Dark Lord ending is the Era of the Men. The Era of the Dark.

That's what Kaathe says. Remember that he (or maybe one of his buddies) tricked Oolacile into waking Manus.

That's not for certain. Gough is not sure when he says that. The point is that the Oolacile Folk do that by their own.

Kaathe it's somewhat evil, right from the start, because he leads the DarkWraiths. That doesn't mean he doesn't want the Era of Men. His reasons are unknown though.

Umm, I'm not going to read through your whole post, because, red text on a dark background, but here:

Buggy Virus wrote:Well, I think your theory is similar to mine and
they really don't conflict, more that yours is embellished.

But on one point, I don't think a sequel would need it to be necessary for the dark lord ending to have happened.

    Because
in the "good" ending, all the main character really does is add fuel
for the bonfires to continue buring, likely the curse of the undead is
still going on and that it would end was just a lie of the primordial
    serpents.

So whether either ending happened, the flame would
still gradually diminish over time, more quickly in the "first flame
ending" than in the "dark Lord" ending, but either way we would end up
at the same product at different times.

But does it really matter if we would reach the same product at different times anyways? Due to time distortion.

No it isn't. The statues in the painted world have faces.

All I know is that the people in Dark Souls need to stop taking advice from giant talking snakes.

The name, Dark Souls II, suggests that this game is a
sequel to Dark Souls. Many people mistakenly thought Dark Souls was the
sequel to Demon's Souls; the new, obvious relationship in the names
certainly seems to require one of them to be related in some manner to
    the other.

Nope. See: Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Fire Emblem, the Elder Scrolls.
