Being a ninja: your opinions wanted.

Post by Rynn on Sun Sep 30, 2012 7:44 am

Recently i enlisted in the ninja department of the Forest Covenant. I'm now a trained assassin designed to take out my opponent before they can hit me, and to ruin their day if worst comes to worst and they see me.

This is the build i made to do it. Now this is a work in progress, i plan on going up in levels until i have 99 strength, Dex, and Int. I will have a catalyst to cast Dark Bead when the DLC comes out, i won't spoil how the spell operates, but trust me, it greatly fits the style of an assassin, ir reminds me of a certain type of modern weapon i'm quite partial to. In addition i'm upgrading to Goughs bow in the DLC, which is like the dragon bow, but it actually does damage.
click here for more info on that comparison:
The Dark Bead spell is 5 side by side orbs, and they quickly spread out. but if your opponent is right next to you, all 5 hit. It feels a lot like a shotgun in that manner.

So i use the Fog Ring permanently, and i rotate inbetween 5 ringa for my other slot, not including the Cat Ring.

So my other 5 rings are.
    • Dark Wood Grain Ring: Used for an additional mobility boost to avoid a large flurry of attacks from my opponent while i run.
    • Wolf Ring: Used when confrontation is neccesary.
    • Hornet Ring: Primary default. I use this to end a battle quickly if a target draws too near without noticing me.
    • Leo Ring: Used for when confrontation is neccesary, and 40 poise won't make a difference.
    • Hawk Ring: Used only during the sniping portion of my battles

The build is pretty straightforward. I shoot arrows from a distance while undetected. These do about 200 to 300 damage a piece, and are primarily to soften a target up, waste estus flasks, and be a jerk. The arrows also serve the purpose of initiation the chase part of my build, as people charge me so i'll stop taking potshots.

So after the first, or second arrow, they will start to chase me. At this time, i still have room to hide again. I attempt to hide and let them pass me by. If successful, i remain hidden until they give up, then fire another arrow. Repeat as neccesary.

Eventually, i get caught, at this point, i just run harder. At this point i leave the shadows and run to a new section of the map, with my greatsword out. This is what i consider the chase part of my build. As soon as i am out of sight, i get off the beaten path, and as soon as the run by me, i hit them with a backstab. Because most people don't heal from a single arrow hit, this normally kills them in their weakened state. If it doesn't, doesn't matter, I'm off running again. If at any time they opt not to chase me, we return to sniper mode.

When phantoms invade, i have 2 protocols. I either continue to shoot dragon arrows, or if they are gankers, i leave my backstabbing ring equipped and i run in to help. I am sneaky about this and normally receive the first backstab prior to the enemy even noticing i exist. If the other phantom dies, return to chase mode.

If chasing is deemed unlikely, or impossible, either due to my enemies weapons, or because they have managed to keep track of me... which is far more difficult then it sounds, i use the wolf ring, or if they have a weapon that stuns above 40 poise, i use the leo ring. Otherwise i keep swapping inbetween the 4 animal rings, and in a pinch, the DWGR.

What an ugly looking ninja! (j/k silly)

On a serious note, I think you'll get a good number of kills so long as you keep on your toes and stick to the plan you have detailed above.

Also, if this is for PTDE, why not then Gough's Greatbow? Yes, it's heavier but I've heard PC users say it is worth it.

when prepare to die comes out, i am switching to it. It's a little bit heavier, 30% heavier.
It does 45% more damage though... a great tradeoff.

frankly, it has 45% more AR. The damage per hit increase will be much larger.

That sounds like a fun build. I will rejoin the forest hunters to try this. Thanks for sharing.

My tallies for today (or at least the last 4 hour gameplay period) was 12 cliffside kills (knock them off), 39 confirmed flask uses purely from the bow, 120 undetected backstabs, and 9 "kill the host while the phantom isn't nearby" sneak attacks.

The Leo ring won't help either of your weapons out that much save the Greatbow, as it only affects physical damage. The magic AR on the GS and the MLBH won't get boosted by the Leo ring.

I figured the reason the b horn was chosen was for the length but was now sure how the leo would affect it. do you think the silver knight spear would be a good replacement?

    I recommend a pike.

I like the pike myself but it is not the longest one. I figure the ninja wants to keep them as far as possible.

Also why the high int? Is it because of the horn?

The Leo Ring is used when i swap out my greatsword for a +15 greatsword.
The int is for the butterfly horn, which is used for chip damage.
The pike is too heavy: otherwise i'd use an enchanted pike for it's superior DPS

The Horn is probably the best spear overall. It's about the same length as the SKS and DSS and chips better than the DSS or the Demon's Spear. It's also light and has one-stat scaling to get max damage. It hits pretty respectably in 2h too, magic defense is almost always the lowest.

I have a maxed out demon spear as well because a lot of asshats will just cast Great Magic Barrier while their phantoms try to backstab me.

I went ahead and made a build at SL 100

Only major difference is I have to use havels ring to fast roll but can switch out rings for any given situation
