Your Favourite Books Empty Your Favourite Books

Post by bunnywink Wed Jul 25, 2012 1:46 pm

The recent posts in the Random Off-Topic thread got me thinking about my favourite books... These are the books I have re-read on countless occassions and am always recommending to friends. Even though they are all so different, I have found them inspiring in their own way:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

The Iron Dragon's Daughter by Michael Swanwick

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland (in a Ship of Her Own Making) by Catherynne M. Valente

His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman

So, what are your favourite books? (I need a new book to read!)

I like A Song of Ice and Fire as well (before the Game of Thrones TV series, which I think is only okay). I haven't picked up the fifth book yet though... I'm waiting for the paperback since the rest of the books I have are paperback.

Seeing as this is a forum for a video game, has anybody read Ready Player One? I've been meaning to pick it up.

Eisenhorn and Ravenor (Dan Abnett) are my top two, closely followed by I am Legend (Richard Matheson) and the entire Gaunt's Ghosts franchise (also Dan Abnett).

^I love reading Stephen King. He has such a great writing style. I read and love The Dark Tower series ("The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." happy), but it was a long time ago... I'd read it again, but it's such a commitment! Of his, I also read The Stand, It, Under the Dome, Cell (this one wasn't very good... silly), Duma Key--I might be forgetting some. To be honest I don't even think his stories are very good, but his writing is a pleasure to read.

My favorite book, though: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, Alexandre Dumas.

I also liked Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. Didn't care all that much for the stories or the characters, but I really enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the architecture, building techniques, and daily life. The "Dark Ages" is such a misunderstood period of time! Many great advances were made during that time, not just during the Renaissance.

I might read the Ender's series next--I think it's time I read something other than Stephen King! (Although, a cursory glance at Wikipedia just now tells me Ender's might be a bigger commitment than I'm in for...) If not, I'll read Le Comte again, brush up on my French.

(I'm so wordy... Why couldn't I just write a list like everyone else?)

(Edit: by the way, my screen name is from the Dark Tower. "Even the dead would run from Blaine, if they could...")

That's awesome. Blaine is tremendous. Love how they got him. What's the 1 for if you don't mind? You should check out Hearts In Atlantis. Great story about a Dark Tower minor character.

Count of Monte Cristo was awesome but that's another commitment
