Catch 22 is my favourite book I think.

Other than that I could go on for hours, but off the top of my head:
    Cloud Atlas
    The 'His Dark Materials' trilogy
    Paradise Lost
    The Shadow of the Wind
    The Siege of Krishnapur
    Ulysses
Pride and Prejudice (yes I'm a man, yes I've read it, yes I enjoyed it - shut up silly)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    World War Z
    Jurrasic Park
    Moby ****

I'll confirm Zechk's statement that Catch 22 is an amazing novel, so bizarre in it's story but so clear in its message.

I'll go ahead and plug another one of my favorite novels of all time, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" The basis for Blade Runner.

I read that a while ago. I found it really difficult going as I recall, but I remember wishing the film (which is admittedly amazing) was a little more like it.

Paradise is a great read, but may be difficult for some. It is a bit controversial in part due to the subject matter, as well the fact that it is essentially one giant poem is also a bit of a challenge for some people. But you might enjoy it, I know I did. Plus it's cool to know the work that influenced so many other pieces, as well as the culture of the world today.

Moby **** is one I need to read, too.

I read Electric Sheep... Don't mean to offend anyone's tastes, but I don't see what all the fuss is about--don't care much for Blade Runner either. I guess I needed to see it when it was first released, but that was 6 years before I'd be born!

Also... MILDRED! First post I've seen of you in a long time. happy

I'm gonna throw in Lolita for the writing style.

Norwegian Wood and Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami are also good, but I find Japanese novels too confusing sometimes. Perhaps something was lost in translation...

If anybody wants to read some of Haruki Murakami's works, this is a wonderful little short: http://www.mat.upm.es/~jcm/murakami-perfect.html/

Doll's House, if only for how groundbreaking it was back when it was written.

Martin Fierro quickly became my favourite Argentinian book after I read it.
    Still gotta finish the sequel.

Poema Conjetural, by Borges. I loved it, mainly because of its historical aspect.

'Perdido Street Station', 'The Scar', 'Iron Council', all by China Mieville

    'Hyperion' series by Dan Simmons

All of Iain M. Banks Culture novels

'The Stars my Destination' by Alfred Bester.

'The Love of Stones' by Tobias Hill.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I read as much as I play games which is a lot. I've read 'Ready Player One' by Ernest Cline. However, the people who'll get the most from this book are gamers who started gaming in the 80's because the games which play a pivotal role are all old arcade games. I am not one of those but even so, I still enjoyed it.

    "The Things They Carried."

A great war story, wonderful writing, face-value emotions, and overall just stuff that any good book should have. I had to read it for a class, but it had me hooked.

"Alex Rider" series, and "Witch and Wizard" series. Extremely good stories with plenty of action and suspense.

Dragging this back up, started the lies of locke lamora last night.

    Essential scifi\fantasy books :

Erikssons Malazan series, head wrecking but awesome.

Wheel of time, finally over it had some really dull moments but for me it defines epic in fantasy.

Dan Simmons Hyperion and Endymion books-Beautiful books is all i can say.

Patrick Rothfuss The king killer Chronicles - different in that it's someone telling their story, can be frustrating at times but its worth it.

Peter F Hamiltons Commonwealth and Void Saga's-The concept of the enemy for the 1st series was pretty cool.

There's way more i can think of and have read.

I have too many good books, I could never fit them in one place. However, I recommend a read of A Street Cat Named Bob. It's a surprisingly good book.

For any fantasy fan i would recommend the chronicles of thomas covenant, it is basically a way darker version of the lord of the rings.
I also really enjoyed "The Road".
The scott pilgrim series even though they are basically a comic book are awesome
Again adding a song of ice and fire.
and Harlen cobens Myron Bolitar series is funny as **** and a well worth it mystery/ crime series
oh ya one more, The girl with the dragon tatoo that series although watching the movie is good because it's equal to the book

Can't be bothered to check if it was already mentioned, and I have too many in my memory to really name them all, but one good book that comes to mind is About a Boy. Painted Bird is also a very good, but very dark book.

I can't even begin to list my favorite books...but the king of that library is Geroge Orwell's 1984.
