I've never broken a mobs guard by shield bashing, kicking seems to work better so to me it seems pretty useless.

It's not technically a bash, but the bonewheel shields L2 is pretty effective. It's a 3 hit to so it usually does break most mobs guard.

The best use I have come up for it is in PvE, if you bash right before they land their blow you'll not only stagger the attack, but do some damage also.

A thoroughly useless manoeuvre that does nothing a kick cant do better. I think it was placed in the game for the sole purpose of denying Greatshields the ultimate block along with parry capabilities.
