    No Bonfire run

Post by Green__Eagle on Sat May 05, 2012 7:16 am

I've decided to try to finish a game without resting at a bonfire, with two exceptions.

I'll need to place the Lord Vessel to gain access to certain bosses. I'll need to rest at that bonfire again to place the four boss souls. I want your opinon: When I have to rest at this bonfire, should I be able to kindle it?

I was a little discouraged to realize that I would always be dead, I would only have 5 estus flasks, and I would soon run out of pyromancy and be up a crick.

My first death (well, ONLY death thus far) was fighting the Tarus Demon. I thought the game would send me back to my prison cell; I was sent back to Firelink and my pyormancy was restored and I was given 10 estus flasks.

Okay, I can do this. If my memory is correct, I think when I defeat a boss, I'll get my body back. As long as I'm alive I should be able to summon help. I think the only help I would need is fighting the Four Kings. But I'm SL 1... not a popular level to summon help for that boss!

If you want to try this, too, you can learn from a couple of mistakes that I have already made. One: don't buy the Bottomless Box. Duh! If it can only be accessed at a bonfire, but you don't plan on resting at a bonfire, the BB is worthless. Two: Pick a toon that can use a bow. I picked the pyromancer thinking it's the easiest low-level fighter, but I don't have enough dexterity and I don't look forward to getting past the snipers in Anor Londo. I won't be able to get the Drake Sword nor do I have the strength to use it if a summond phantom was able to get it for me.

I am having fun in the game again; and I have to be careful. No matter how far I progress now, whenever I die I will go back to Firelink Shrine and have to fight my way to wherever my blood spoor is. Good thing this bonfire is somewhat centrally located!

After I place the Lord Vessel, and then die, I should return to it. Here's my final question: Is it fair to rest at this bonfire to warp, or should I use Kingseeker Frampt to return me to Firelink and then have to walk to my bloodspoor? I'm thinking I should use Frampt.

What are your thoughts? Am I overlooking something obvious? Is this something you would be interested in attempting?

You will not get your body back from defeating bosses.
The firelink altar bonfire will be kindled by offering (all?) lord souls.
You can not warp to a bonfire unless you have rested there prior.
You must rest at a bonfire to get your body back, level up, and attune spells. Or are you doing a full level 1 playthrough as well?

I might be wrong on these, but if I'm right they could both mess up your progress, or save you some hassle: After you finish the painted world, your spawn point will move to anor londo. After Seath kills you (the first time) your spawn point will move to the dukes archives prison.

wow! good luck! i predict moments where you might end up killing someone with rage. at least you can still upgrade weapons and armor and your pyro hand(even if you are stuck with just the basic fireball). theres really no way for you to be in human form and i dont think you will care much about kindling bonfires since the only one you are allowed to rest at is when you place the lord vessal mid/end game.

edit: you will be forced to be undead the whole playthrough. and i think when you place the lord vessal you dont rest at it you just place it. so the only time you would NEED to rest is when you have all 4 lord souls which is the very end of the game and i think you might be right in picking hunter but its personal preference i guess.

Good luck. Just think about the distance you have to run when fighting bed of chaos. Do update your run to this thread. I'd enjoy reading your progress.

You're going to rage-quit at the bed of chaos.

I already have something like this in the works and am recording it.

Although mine is supposed to be a no death run as well.

Yeah you'll have to rest at the abyss fire too or you're not getting out of there. Good luck man. I think you can probably do it considering all the low level stuff you've done.

You don't have to rest at the Abyss bonfire in order to get out of there. You can kill yourself with the Darksign and you'll spawn somewhere else. You might end up in the Archives prison or Firelink Shrine. Depends on what order you progress.

For those places you can't walk out of, you can use a homeward bone. And I'm not sure if you automatically rest at the Lordvessel when you place it, so you could probably just homeward bone back to firelink after. I know, for instance, when you offer the lord souls to the vessel, which kindles it, when your character gets back up you don't have 20 flasks, so it doesn't count as you resting there. That's why I'm guessing placing it doesn't count as resting there either.

In any case: when in doubt, homeward bone!

    Good luck!

My run is going "OK" thus far. Taurus Demon was easy the second time. The Bell Gargoyles went down the first time.

I'm currently in the Depths with the shortuct open. I haven't tried fighting Gaping Dragon yet. I have 3 flasks and three fireballs. I'm waiting to be summoned by a human.

While I don't get my body back after a victory over a boss (that was Demon's Souls), I do get my flasks and pyromancy back after I am summoned by a human and we're victorious or the host dies. If I die, I come back with my depleted flaks & pyro.

I've been explaining to my host when I've been summoned that I'm doing a no-bonfire run and that I'm sorry I'm not stronger; that if they really need help killing a boss, I have a SL10 guy in NG+ whom they could summon. So far, we've always been victorious.

I'm using the Hand Axe+5 and just picked up the Large Ember and am thinking about going to see Andre to upgrade that to a +9. My heater shield is +5 so I should upgrade that, too.

The comments about the Abyss or Bed of Chaos are correct; I'll use a Homebone to return. If you didn't have a homebone in the Abyss, you could just take off Artorias Ring!

Oh, man! You should have seen me combing through my stuff looking for the best armor with curse resistance. 1.2 resistance here, 2.2 resistance there. I made a trip through the frogs just for the Evil Eye ring. If I had to do it over, I would kill the Hydra, kill the golden golem, and talk to the Ocilioa (?) merchant. If you go back to where the golden golem was, there is a set of Antique dress armor that has high curse resistance. I'll have to make that trip before I attempt Seath. The first time I encounter Seath, I want to be close to death, but high in curse resistance.

You've done low SL runs a few times now right? I'm thinking about doing an SL10 run, most likely starting with a pyromancer, just because it seems like the most well off starting class. What do you think the most important stats are for those 10 levels? I know I want to raise STR to 14ish so I can use more weapons, but aside from that I'm not really sure.

I build minimal stats of Strength 16 (Drake Sword, Gargoyle Halberd, Heavy Crossbow) and Dexterity 12 (Bow). No starting class has a strength 16 as a base stat.

Heavy Crossbow only needs 14 Strength (I think), but a Fire Heavy Crossbow+10 will take out a ghost with one shot using Heavy Bolts. Most other enemies go down with one-hit, too.

BAD NEWS: No Bonfire Game RUINED! (?)

I figured out how to defeat Gaping Dragon solo, but I was summoned in Undead Burg and some glicher did a massive dump of everything he was carrying. It took me a half hour to pick everything up. I couldn't stop myself!

I now have rings, weapons, and armor that I have never heard of, some that are maxed out.

As near as I can determine, these are my choices: Should I dump everything I was given (GASP!) and continue? Should I delete the character and start again later after I stop crying? Should I take advantage of the situation and begin leveling up? Should I start giving away invidual items to lucky players who have not rung the first bell? Should I max out low-level weapons that a SL10 guy could use and give those away? Should I delete this post and hope people forget I have all these unique weapons?

If I were to start a new game, I'd have to give serious thought to start as a Hunter or a Pyromancer. Pyro glove can be upgraded to be very strong, but you only have 8 fireballs. A Hunter can use a bow and easily pull individual enemies from a mob. Poison arrows take out strong enemies from a safe distance, too.

I say continue on. Mule the items if you want to keep them, but depending on how far you have already made it, why stop now? Also, just a thought, but if you are summoned and retuen with all your spells and flasks restored, if you did buy the BB, then no harm in sitting down, dumping it in there, as long as you keep yourself honest and don't level or do anything that would constitute actually using the BF. Just an idea or two. happy

What were you given that you've never heard of? I'd keep going. Just because you have that stuff doesn't mean you have to use it. You could even create another character and have someone help you mule it all to it for a future build. I would definitely help you out with that if you wanted.

Didn't see the above post. Yes, I agree.
