Never have I seen Gaping do this...

So, I'm running ANOTHER toon through its first playthrough, and I decide to do some humanity farming after beating Fatboy and Slim.

I'm in the depths and I come across this helpless thief trying to invade me, so I one-shot it with my Lightning Zwiehander and move on. Later I come to the entrance to Gaping Dragon and see what could be the very same thief sitting here with her summoning sign down.

I decide that I will help her out since the souls might help out what I assume is a new player. I pick up her summon, get Sunbro for funsies, and make my way through the door.

The fights going along just fine, Sunbro dies, ninja is just running, and I am hitting this Dragon for maybe 10% of its health each swing. I get it to about one-third health and out of nowhere, it jumps up, flies all the way across the map and lands on me, one-shotting me in the process.

Now, Ive seen Gaping jump plenty of times, and I've even been unfortunate enough to be hit by the jump, living with more than enough health to feel comfortable. THIS TIME THOUGH, I am on the other side of the room putting on my sack because I don't feel right having one and not owning it, and as soon as I leave the item screen BAM its flying across the room and lands on me. Instakill.

Has anyone else experienced this before?

TL;DR: Gaping dragon flys across room and instakills me like it wanted my sack so hard.

I've had this happen. I dodged it but ya I've seen it go across the map to get me. I have no idea really why it does it, maybe just because of how far away you are from it depends on the chance of it doing it but I don't think it uses it often since I've only seen in twice between two seperate playthroughs.

Weird.

Also, when I came to at my bonfire, I got a message saying that the monsters would return to normal after I kill the Gravelord.

At first I was pissed because I thought he had buffed Gaping but then I realized he probably can't do that.

Huh never had that message appear before. It could of been something with buffing the Gaping Dragon but I really have no idea on that one.

Probably had nothing to do with the gravelord. I have seen the Gaping Dragon fly across the room quite frequently, I imagine that is has a certain chance of doing it depending on your distance from it.

I had it do its slam/charge move on me. I avoided the slam and charge and as I ran up to its tail to cut it off his tail casually swings side to side and 1hhko's me. I was like "WTF?? Rofl"!!!!

Well, maybe because it is said that if you do have BPs in your world the other beast become more aggressive. I noticed this in the forest when I got cursed and had BP mushrooms. The forest hunters seemed a lot more aggressive and pursed me farther into the forest than other times. I had asked a couple of others who had been cursed with mushroom BPs if the hunter NPCs were more aggressive and the noticed the same.

This would be a perfect example of monsters getting more aggresive.

that is exactly why i never lock on to the gaping dragon lol, so when sh*t like that happens i can easily dodge it, and yes, he has used that flying attack on me multiple times.

Online that typically happens because of Lag. It flies up, then in their world it moves, but it counts as still being up in the air to you. So when it gets to you it slams and hits you with both the charge and slamming attack at the same time. I've seen it happen quite a few times as a host, and every time the phantom was nowhere near the Gaping Dragon I was looking at.

I know this isn't related to your question per se, but I had the gaping dragon do something odd last night. I started a new character and made it to the gaping dragon. I had Heavy Soul Arrow, Great Soul Arrow and Great Heavy Soul Arrow attuned. I summoned Solaire and Lautrec. Normally, I use them to keep him busy while I pelt him with sorceries.

Right out of the gate, he did the attack where he picks someone up and eats them, to Solaire. He was down to 1/2 health. He then, immediately did it again. BAM! Solaire was down. Then, he did it to Lautrec 2 times in a row. BAM! Lautrec was down. Both of them were dead within the first minute of the fight and I was stuck with no way to distract him.

Luckily, I pulled through, with a LOT of running and dodging. After all my spells got off, he was at about 1/4 health. I then used a longsword with Pine Resin (I only had 1 in my inventory). Got him down to next to no health, and the pine resin ran out. My Longsword started doing 15 damage. Then, I waited for him to do his attack where he crawls across the floor, and I opened my inventory and pulled out the Drake Sword to finish the fight quickly. Needless to say, the fight was epic.
