    Art Appreciation thread

Post by GrinTwist on Sun Oct 06, 2013 3:15 pm

Do you have a favorite picture of yours on your computer that you want to show to others and discuss why you like it?

Keep in mind that anything that you have in your picture folder can in fact be considered a work of art, just remember to explain why you think it should be considered a work of art.

Also, for the record if you are looking to bring your own art to the table this is not the thread for it, this is only for the art that you've found throughout the internet. For a thread where you can show off your own works of art, please visit Skare's Museum of Souls.

    RULES

    1. While art is a very subjective term, please do not post images that are crude or are just incredibly mediocre.
    2. When explaining why a picture that has been posted is 'art' please do not use a reason 'It's art because this character is my waifu.' If I see this or anything similar your post will be reported.
    3. While discussion on why an image may be art is promoted please use an actual form of criticism, if you feel you cannot do so in a manner that abides by the forum rules then do not post until you have found a way that does abide by forum rules.
    4. Spam won't be tolerated, at all.

Above all, please have fun posting while here! happy

I'm not gonna link just one for my first post, but rather a google search that has resulted in many pictures of similar concepts.

Having made a quick search on "alone pictures", I can quickly get the results I want to talk about. Pictures showing the black silhoutte of a person sitting all alone, often leaning against a wall. I'll be using this picture in particular:

I find that this picture(among many others) is very "beautiful", as it can give some insight on depression once you try to analyse it. What do you see? A person, hidden by the shadows all alone in a tunnel, with light coming in from the background. So what could we take out of this?

Clearly the person is all alone. There is no light in his life, however he can see everyone elses' light. Or rather, everyone elses' happiness. He wishes for it, but he can't find it himself. He's stuck in a tunnel, with only two ways to go. Back, or forth. But he's too scared to do either of them. That is why I find that this picture, or any picture that follows the same concept can be considered art. Because it means something, because it stands for something and because it says something.

Um.. just wondering, but don't we already have the museum of souls? What's the difference between this thread and the museum?

Oh does this count as Art, because it's fan-made, and I really love it.

In the Museum of Souls you post your own work. This is to discuss other works not made by yourself. As an example, if you wish to discuss Mona Lisa, you post it here. Not in Museum of Souls.

I think Grin means "ART" as in pictures you would see as art like in a museum or something. You already have your spam thread for your cartoons and anime. No need to add them here as they are NOT considered art IMO.

@Grin - I'll post a few pics this week once I take them off my old pc cause I still have to transfer stuff onto this netbook.

Actually I posted that there, because it was a fanmade picture... Someone actually designed it. I still deem it as art, and the only reason why I posted in this thread in the first place was my confusion between this and the museum of souls. And while posting I felt a need to contribute to the thread. And the definition of art depends on the person. I would expect you to understand that. Now if you excuse me I will contribute once more and then get back to my cuteness.

My contribution to this thread. Once again it's fan made

    1. While art is a very subjective term, please do not post images that are crude or are just incredibly mediocre.
    2. When explaining why a picture that has been posted is 'art' please do not use a reason 'It's art because this character is my waifu.' If I see this or anything similar your post will be reported.

@Stray Those images can in fact be considered an art form, however when posting images of fandom or something similar, it's expected for the poster to explain why they see that image as a form of art. I do expect to see variation in art types whether they be videos like this, sculptures like this, or images like you posted above are fine by this thread's rules however explanation as to why you think they are art is required. The explanations don't need to be long in-depth reasons but the reasons you do give are expected to be somewhat mature.

The reason why this is a rule is quite simple, art is a very subjective term. So anything can be considered art, but why it's considered a form of art in the posters view is something that is required when posting that said 'art'. The only thing I ask is that your reason for posting an image be a mature reason.

A simple highlight of how the atmosphere in a video or picture works is a good valid reason, but if the reason is simply because 'you love it because it's from a show you like' isn't. Fandom is something I allow because I can recognize that certain pieces of work from a fan artist can in fact be considered art even when viewed by someone that doesn't recognize the source material.

I hope that clears everything up, if not feel free to ask more questions. happy

Posting this as this piece of art is a fantastic parody of christianity and the extremely famous piece of art that this piece is parodying. I hope I do not offend, but you guys should be aware that the religion it is from is by all means and ends just for fun:

The symbol of purity and beauty, the rose, stained with a symbol of life and death, blood.

I love this image, and it was just a quick search that found it.

Similar to the one with the stained rose, it reminds me of the balance between life and death, beauty and ugly.

    Sadness and happiness.

You are still NOT following Grin's rules. Explain why you think this is a piece of art. Saying it's amazing is just spamming the thread with your anime and cartoons.

Here is the proper way to do it.
    The thinker,
I can't remember why this was done but over the years people have had many different reasons for it.  I like it because I am a thinker. I think of lots of things such as ways to improve upon something that could have been built/created better.

Somehow I keep effing up the process. I was hoping someone could help me out with this.

But how do I go about attaching a pic from one of my folders? I hit host an image, find the one I want. But then, I lose the ability to type in a description of what I'm posting.

    Please and thank you.

Unless I misunderstood the question, to share an image, you need the link, then, once you have it, you press one of the icons on the lower left. Mousing over them will say "Host an image" and "Insert Image". Using "Insert Image" allows for you to change the size as to fit the forums more properly, assuming that it's bigger than should be. If using the link still does not result in an hosted image, it may be that you're using the link for the website it's on, in which case you need to right-click the image and select "Open image in new window" or something along those lines. If however, by folders you mean directly from your PC, you need to upload them to an image hosting website, such as PhotoBucket or ImageShack. From there you can either share it by doing what I told you to do, or use the sharing fuction that the websites have to offer.

I'll post my pic and walk you thru what I did to get it from my desktop.
First thing you do is select the "Host an Image" button. Select your image and hit the host it button. For some reason I had to click "Host an Image" button again. That gave me 3 links. Press the copy button on the top one and then hit the "Insert Image" in the reply box. Close the white square box you get by clicking your mouse in the reply box away from that other little box.
Press CTRL + V and it should paste a link for you, (like so),

That should put your pic in here.

Reason I chose this is because I thought it was the coolest pic I found on this subject. I like Greek Mythology because their Gods are actually pretty cool. Also, you see more movies using Greek Gods than you do any other God people believe in. My picture of the God Zeus, King of Olympus fit this spot perfectly.

Art is art. Whether it's good, bad, topical, nonsensical, esoteric, niche, or high-minded, it's still art. Don't call something someone made "not art." Call it unoriginal or low brow or just not deep enough to warrant discussion. But it's still technically art.

I personally would have thought the fact it's called art appreciation would hint at the calibre of art that should go in here.

You cant really appreciate any kind of meaning or emotional connection with a fan art version of some Pokemon. Maybe it gets you screwing up your face and saying "aww" or "kawaii" as you all say here, but that's not really in my opinion what the thread is for.

But even done by children is still art. Reason I say this is because of this is a piece that was put up in a childrens art section in a museum.

Now if you're saying you don't want something like my 3 yr old nephew does which is scribbling a bunch of lines and stuff on a page, I understand.
But, no matter how old the person is, it's still art.

Just think about the cool pics skares daughter made that he has used as avatars big grin
