Another point of this was that I really didn't know these guys squeak. Only with the r2 attack as well.

Funny, I just saw one in the Township earlier. It has to be at least the 9th one I've seen. Spent a lot of time staring at it, and noticed that if you change the camera angle, the weird blackish stuff inside of it doesn't move. You can never get a different viewpoint of it, it seems.

Yeah, it's a two dimensional object so it only "exists" on one plane. The cool thing is that when you kill them (black ones) their bodies disintegrate and it looks cool. I've only seen black evil ones though. This is maybe my third or fourth one. First one killed me as I didn't know what it was and had just started the game

I only ever saw one vegrant in my entire time playing this game. I know they are rare, but ive played dark souls for a long time and i thought i would have seen more. Is there any specific areas that they appear or is it just random?

One spawns where the archers are when you enter the boss fog at the Burg. Another spawns by the crossbow hollow in the tower on the way to the boss fog. Then another spawns in one of the bandit rooms in the lower undead burg. Another spawns on the bridge as your heading to the sunlight altar, then another vagrant spawns in the undead church by the firekeeper soul, and one spawns outside of the church by the three hollows you encounter. (I believe by the undead archer)
There are a lot more areas where they spawn and they normally have 2-4 spawn locations per area. The only exceptions of this would be the Tomb, Izalith, the Kiln, the crystal caves, depths, the asylum, and the DLC areas.
Oh and the most common area you might see them is in New Londo since there are five known locations where they spawn.
