Re: Brony Thread
Alright, fully-articulated thoughts time.
- Written based off bullet-points I made while watching it a second time. Forgive me if these thoughts don't flow very well. And if the spoiler tag didn't make it obvious, I'm dropping lots of spoilers, but just to be safe I'm actually typing out a spoiler warning here:
- For the first canonical time we're seeing her since she became a Princess, they did a good job of making sure Twilight was still Twilight. She still has her uncertainty about things she's unfamiliar with and didn't suddenly jump into some kind of super-competence. The fact that she can't use her wings is relieving as well. All of this points to show that Twilight still has significance and places to go as a character, if not even more paths for growth than before.
I really didn't care for Sunset Shimmer. On every level she just kind of failed as a villain. For having supposedly been in the human world for a long time, she still had no understanding of how we really operate socially with her only claim to popularity (and subsequently her only chances at winning back the Element of Magic) was that she was feared as a bully. Then of all the attempts she makes to sabotage Twilight, only the first one had any significance. I've heard the comparisons to Trixie, and while she is just a copy/paste of Trixie's personality, I can understand why they made her a new character because it would debunk established canon to have Twilight and Trixie fighting again due to their relationship having already been settled in the series.
I liked the idea behind the conflict, even if it wasn't well executed (the faults being mostly in Sunset Shimmer's character though). It brings back up the idea that Twilight still is kind of an introvert, and makes the conflict one of the Socially Inept versus the Socially Adept. It was a good place to challenge Twilight as a character that hasn't really been done before, and was reinforced by the importance social status holds in a High School setting. Though, again, it kind of fell short because Sunset Shimmer wasn't really socially adept, she was just a bully.
I really liked how there was mention of the Human World Twilight, and how it was handled to both be comparable to Twilight's situation in Equestria and cover holes in potentially confusing canon. Pinkie Pie makes mention that Human Twilight is in another city, mirroring how Twilight and Pinkie weren't originally from Ponyville (giving credence to the idea that Pinkie would actually be a reliable source for this information unlike any of the other Mane 6 who are all Ponyville natives), and it explains why we don't run into Human World Twilight while also debunking any of the silly "possession" theories that were going around.
While the relationship was kind of forced (forgivable due to the time restraints inherent with a film), I actually hope Flash Sentry becomes a reoccurring character in the series, but only if they don't go overboard with the relationship. Preferrably less, but no more emphasis than the Spike/Rarity relationship. Handled in proper amounts it could be at a minimum another avenue for character growth from Twilight, and at best a whole new, fully-realized cast member. But again, everything in moderation. I can all too easily see how it could blow up in their faces if they don't handle it well.
Going back to mirroring the series...human Fluttershy's introduction. The fact that Fluttershy got alot of emphasis in general is just all around a good thing to me.
I felt like the conflict between the Human World Mane 6 was incredibly forced. Was there a reason for Sunset Shimmer to be behind their separation? Why couldn't they have simply not really been associated with each other beforehand? That would have made Twilight have to learn approach each of them (which would have been a better execution on the Socially Inept vs Socially Adept theme in my opinion), and with each of them representing the various cliques in the school it still would have made sense and given her a reason to approach them (having existing knowledge of their personalities would make them easier to approach for the awkward Twilight while having them help secure each cliques support for her). Maybe it's cliche, but hardly more cliche than what they went with, and would have given more believable support behind her victory rather than the "cleaning the place up" montage they used while also allowing that portion of the film to be used to better develop Sunset Shimmer as a character. I dunno...I just feel it could have been handled better, even within the time constraints of a movie.
Alright, back to things I liked. I liked how Twilight considered cliques to be odd. It shows the differences in human and Equestian cultures, mostly due to the absence of cutie marks in the human world. There was some analysis video I watched that talked about this, but the existence cutie marks basically make education in Equestria past elementary school unnecessary, while also removing alot of the social experimentation that goes with finding where you belong. In Equestria, by the time you're basically a teenager, you know what you're meant to do with the rest of your life, so you only have to focus on that. So in the human world, it makes sense for this culture based around "fitting in" to be a foreign concept to Twilight.
The movie seemed to break away from how we know the Elements of Harmony to work. It's kind of lampshaded by Sunset Shimmer early on when she says they act differently in another dimension, but without some explanation of exactly how they're different, it felt more like a hand wave or dismissal of the idea. The bottom line is, from what we've seen in the series they aren't supposed to have any actual power unless united as a set and being used simultaneously by their chosen owners. Without at least a few new details, it doesn't really make sense for the Element of Magic to have any power or even function at all by itself.
Lastly, on the development and artistic side of things, the voicework, animation, and music were all still excellent. Actually quite a bit better than what I expected, having heard that some Bronies thought them animating humans looked awkward. Not much more to say besides "good job MLP staff!"
All in all, I'd give it a 8/10 or 9/10. I enjoyed it quite alot (though not quite as much as some of my favorite episodes from the series), and regret that I had to see it in this format as opposed to going to a theater.

Well, you didn't HAVE to.
Perhaps Sunset Shimmer is just Trixie and Gilda's love child?!?!?
Anyway, nice read and nice review - more forgiving than most of what I've seen but your perspective is always highly regarded by me, especially when it pertains to ponies.

Re: Brony Thread
I've watched it a few days ago (sorry for not sharing it sooner guys ) and well, here's my opinion .
I think i continue my rambling another Time, i'm kind of on a tight shedule and i just had a 12 Hour per day Week with three more days to go .
- Spoiler:
Spoilers incoming !
There were also several cringe worthy throwbacks to previous Episodes .
For example after Twilight stood up for Fluttershy when she was bullied by Sunset she talks normally to Twilight before going all "I'm Fluttershy" just like in Episode one, it felt really out of place and unnecessary .
There are a few other instances where this happened but i have to watch the Movie again to list them all .
And Sunset Shimmer is like Reaper said just Trixie 2.0, fails as a Villain and isn't very interesting, i was hoping that she would be jealous of Twilights Princess status and that that would be her motive to steal her Crown . That would have been cool
Also Rarity and Applejack didn't really get a lot of screentime to shine (Rarity has one of the funniest scenes in the Movie with Spike though)
Those are my only complains about the Movie though .
Everything else i liked, the Animation, the Music, the Voice acting and especially the Humor, i was laughing throughout most of the Movie .
I was worried that Princess Twilight -after her horrid performance in S3- would be an unenjoyable Character, the total opposite was the case .
She was goofy, and adorable .
However Spike really shines in this Movie, i was worried that him becoming a Dog would reduce him to a low Comic relief Character or a stupid Sidekick that screws everything up like in the Show, the total opposite was the case .
He is more intelligent, funny and usefull than he ever was in the Show .
Can't really say much about the rest of the Main 6 .
The Plot itself was pretty bad .
Spoilers incoming !
The Conflict between the Main 6 for example was solved by asking a single Question.
I think i continue my rambling another Time, i'm kind of on a tight shedule and i just had a 12 Hour per day Week with three more days to go .

Sounds like you've been really busy lately, Marino. Explains your short absence.
Anyway, the things you wrote about Spike sound really encouraging.

I've been back since last Sunday night.
I guess I should've posted in my thread saying I was back, instead of only telling the Chat people.
So, yeah. Hey, I'm back!

My understanding is that she's about average. The only reason she seems weak is because the only unicorn we have extended knowledge of to compare her to
