Weird random creature in Blighttown

Today I was farming slugs for some large titanite shards, so I would go to the bonfire to heal, head to the slugs, homeward, rinse and repeat.

I came across a place in there with a black and red ball, but when I started getting close, it vanished, just like the Crystal Lizards (except it was black and red, not blue and white).

I went back to the bonfire, rested and went back to the same place, nothing was there.

I kept farming the slugs until I found that thing again, so I decided to stay far and get a screenshot, as I couldn't find anything about it on the wiki:




After taking the screenshot I decided to try and kill it... Since everytime I moved close to it it disappeared (even though I was running at lightweight and wearing the rusted iron ring) I shot a heavy arrow in it that inflicted 4 damage. The creature disappeared again.

Does anyone know what is that?

It's a vagrant.

I read somewhere that vagrants are completely random, but that one respawns at the very same spot every now and then... I just found it weird... Well, thanks!

It's my understanding that vagrants can be spawned by items dropped in the world, or bloodstains that go unclaimed for a period of time. If this is true, I'm surprised we don't see more vagrants in the Great Hollow. How many people leave stain after stain there, as they make trial-and-error attempts to reach treasures?

I don't even try to get those treasures anymore. On my first playthrough with my first character I got all the treasures after a few dozen deaths. On my second playthrough I did the same thing. Then I said to myself, "This is it? All those deaths for a couple souls and chunks? I can get these more easily farming the Black Knights." Now I only get the Cloranthy Ring.

@msatoshi: You should stop hunting those vagrants! They are an endangered species.

I've so far notice that Vagrants seem to only appear in places that allow online play. For examples the Valley of the Drakes, Asylum, and areas such as Anor Londo's Bonfire cannot have any.

I've found a random pickup at firelink once. I think it was a prism stone. I found another random pickup there later. These are supposed to be what turn into vagrants. However, I don't think I've seen any vagrants at firelink, but I've only found one vagrant the whole time I've played this game.

I saw one once in oolacile township, before it decided to walk off a cliff. I tried adding it to the wiki (not that anyone reads it) but it wouldn't let me

Ublug wrote:You have to be approved by a moderator before you can edit, it usually takes a day or so. Some of the pages are locked (very few) and can only be changed by mods.

Basicly, if had the same problem I did, then you just need to wait a day or two.

I wasn't going to, but then realized I wanted the dragon scales for upgrades. It's so hard to go by anything shiny and not pick it up. The game preys on our tendency to covet. It's all about our greed. Just one more swing of the sword....OH NO, I'M OUT OF STAMINA!!!!!

You could always PM an admin and get this figured out, it may be a problem with the hosting site. If it can't be resolved I'd still suggest mentioning it to someone who does edit the wiki so it can be added if it hasn't been already.

I forgot to tell that I saw my first vagrant ever (after a zillion hours of gameplay), it was in new londo on the spot where you summon beatrice. I was down there trying to create vagrants (while farmming), and had just turned some transient curse items into lloyd's talismans. The last run before the vagrant appeared I dropped a prism stone and a transient curse at the exact spot the vagrant spawned, what are the odds?

You know, a couple of weeks ago I also finally saw my first vagrant in the Parish, right next to the altar where Rhea prays. After I killed it, I kinda stood there for a bit, just staring at it's design. Really wanted to soak up the details of it lol.

I have only ever seen one in the church also it scared the crap out of me and gave me 4 twin humanities no lie, I have never seen one since.....sadness

I think Tolvo's right. Every time I've ever seen a vagrant, which has only been a couple of times, it's been somewhere with pretty high online traffic. The forest, the parish, and near the second bonfire at the dukes archives. Most of the ones I've seen have been late at night at low SL in the parish.

Out of the year I played Dark Souls, I've only ever had four appear. 2 in undead church, 1 in Anor Londo and 1 in Darkroot Garden. I spotted the one in Darkroot Garden by pure fluke as it's right where the wolf ring is. I'll have to upload the video of it at some point as no one so far has video footage of it.

I forgot that the Vagrant tried to ninja me with a jumping claw attack. I've never known them to ever do a move like that.

I saw a white vagrant in the undead asylum where the rusted iron ring is once. That was the only time I've ever seen one.

It could have been a diffrent vagrant. I've read there are two types of vagrants: a shy one, and a mean tempered one.

It's the evil drift vagrant as you can tell from the video.

Do the 'good' vagrants attack you at all? Or do they just bolt? I've only ever encountered one and it didn't move at all. It just sat there and let me kill it.

one of those buggers was by the hellakite bonfire, i promptly killed it thinking it was an invader and got 3 humanity, i felt pretty good that day:)
