So I took to reading about how the game matches up players and I started over staying at level 20 thinking I would face players not too much higher than my skill level. That seems to work, but, I find the invaders have armor that my +5 sword won't scratch and weapons that kill me with 1 hit thru my sheild. Is this normal? What am I doing wrong? I don't mind dying to learn, but I don't see any amount of skill that would match the armor and weapons I face. Thanks for the advice.

Your fighting people with end-game equipment it sounds. In otherwords, they might as well be several times your level and way higher than your skill level

You say you're in the forest? Were you in the forest hunter covenant? Because that is why you fight people with better items. Forest hunters have no sl cap for invaders and it generally is not kind to people. Might want to try somewhere else first.

Unfortunately that's normal. Just play through the game offline at least until you ring the second bell. Grab all the stuff you can when going through the areas. When you get to Anor Londo you should have some decent stuff.
I would recommend completing the game at least once before PvPing.
