I know this is a sketchy topic, but I think that from could pull it off. Imagine being in an area like the forest with one or two summons. But enemies are constantly coming.
The ents are continually sprouting out of the ground in random locations, loads of other enemies are constantly climbing up from the cliffs, occasionally a really tough enemy like a black knight will walk in through the fog door, and more and more forest enemies will keep coming at you. to make the matters worse, occasionally another person will invade to give you hell.
There could be a survival mode for each area.
Some people may say that this goes against the souls theory of memorizing enemy positions and stuff like that, but I still think that it would be fun, and it would help with learning how the enemies individual attack patterns are. It would add a different feel to the game because normally the enemies only attack you if you get near them but now they will seek you out.
