Lets say you have an host and an invader. One of them has a poor connection, and the other has a good connection. Does the lag appear for both players? Does it favor one over the other?

I have been wondering that myself for a while now.
If the host is lagging I would assume that the host appears to be laggy on the invaders screen and same goes for the invader being laggy on the hosts screen.
To answer your question I think it would only favor one and not both.

It actually depends on the type of connection apparently.

There are mutual ones. I believe the other kind has to do with upload versus download. It is possible for a player to receive information from another while slowly giving their own away. As such the person may appear to be far away when in actuality they are right beside the other. Because of this they can just hit the person without being seen and when they finally send the information, the person who was receiving will instantly die. But these sorts of connections are very rare from what I've seen. They have nothing at all to do with distance but entirely are based upon how good each person's connection is.
