When I turn it on, it comes on for like, a second or two then stop whirring and a red light just flashes at me... It keeps doing it, I think it's broke...

Anyone know if this is just temporary or if I'll need a new PS3 altogether?

And when it just cuts out a the light goes yellow for a split second before flashing red

You may be able to get a refurbished one from Sony. That is what I did when this happened to my first generation ps3. I believe it was $150. Sorry to hear this.

Also if your saves are not nonlinear you should see if someone knows how to retrieve your data otherwise it is gone for good.

Just pull out the hard drive and swap it with hard drive in the new one. Should only take like 10 minutes and you'll keep your data.

I don't mind losing the game data to be honest with you lol, when I go back to a game I usually replay it from the start anyways..

Damn, ill ring up sony see if it's fixable (evidently not), and then I'll just take the PS3 apart, take out the hard drive and my dark souls copy and buy a slim, sounds like a play boys... Prostration

Forum are the hardrives of the original PS3 and Slim interchangeable?

Guys should I get another fat playstation or get a slim? I dunno if the slim has backward compatibility..

It has the ps1 but not the ps2. I'd get the oldest system possible.

I actually don't know the answer to that, I'd google it.

When my PS3 got the yellow light of death (on the release date of black ops, no less) I had to take it apart to get my copy of GTA4 out. But yeah, there's no fixing it, you're gonna have to get a new one. I would get a slim, just because.

Serious, I'm pretty sure all PS3 use the same drives. I upgraded my fatty fatty one and it used a standard laptop 2.5" hard drive. Reviews on drives I was looking at indicated they were used on newer models. I ended up pulling one out of a broken laptop and put it in. One reformat and backup later and I was good to go. You should just be able to do a swap I'm sure to the new one.

My first Ps3 did the yellow light of death, I opened it up and got my disc out, wasn't hard. Also took the 360gb HDD I put in out and installed it in my new one so I didn't loose data.

Also if you check with Sony they'll fix it for $100

Sounds a lot like the RROD that my prior Xboxes had.

    Truly sucked.

If your ps3 is a fatty and you buy a slim you'll have to format after putting it in the slim. The slim needs to store firmware and OS backup data on the HDD, while the fatso did this on board. So going from fatso to slim you cannot save your data with a simple drive swap.

Also note, the Slim is cooler and quieter. It runs much better then the fatso.

However if you have one of the first few models with the card slots, extra Usbs and full backwards compatability send that thing in to get repaired! It's totally worth it.

However if you have the revised fatty that doesn't play Ps1 and Ps2 discs just get a slim, its better.

Yeah, that's what I was intending to do.. I'm gonna leave it a little while before I do that but I'm intending to ring them up, ask if I can get my hardrive and disc out and then swap it for another Playstation, though I wouldn't be fussed about losing the hard disk to be honest.

    Seconded.

The original PS3's had backwards compatability, but the newer ones, including the slims do not.

What you are describing is indeed the "Yellow Light of Death" and is fewer and far between than the RRoD and typically only happens to the old PS3's that were backwards compatable. This was because the was they put it together essentially caused a load of problems for the system., causing it to fail. Which is why sony stopped making backwards compatable PS3's...

Thank goodness my fatty is still running smooth (knocking on wood). The RROD was easy to fix with some silver paste and new screws. Is there a do it yourself method for PS3?

If you send it back to Sony you will need to send the hard drive as well. So if you are going to try to back it up do that to some other device before you send it off.

Also, on getting the disc out. A couple Ideas before dissassembly. One have you tried having the system off and pressing and holding the eject button/sensor. I think this worked when this happened to me. If not, you can see if you can get it out with tweezers. A firend of mines kids managed to stuff three or four discs into his PS3 at once and he was able to tweeze them out.

Finally, on my other post it should have said "online" not "nonlinear" which makes no sense. Thank you auto complete.

    Good luck.

yeah forum, the slims have compatibility for PS1 games, but sadly not PS2, which is obviously a marketing tactic for you to buy into Son made Bluray films rather than the DvD market but oh well, they can be as cheap as they want Shrug

Yeah, I'll try that to get the disk out, I've got refurbed PS3s before and I'll probably get another. It'll last until the PS4 is out I reckon so I don't mind getting one that wont go for years and years. Only gots like £100 or something so way cheaper than new PS3 anyways.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm hoping to get myself sorted soon as I can. happy
