    Some build/character questions.

Post by OmegaDivider on Thu Apr 19, 2012 11:27 pm

Greetings, I have just recently started started playing Dark Souls (was finally able to pilfer the xbox from my brother) so, at first I went with a thief style character, decided I should become more skilled and tried a Pyromancer into a warrior.

I built him with high defense/attack in mind. He is Soul Level 51 or so with 20 Vitality, 26 or so Endurance and 30 Strength. Equipped with the Elite Knight Set mostly all of it is +4-6, and a Zweihander that is +10. I am able to handle most enemies, and the larger ones will either still stagger from my weight, and if I really need to I have Iron Skin, but I feel for most bosses that I fight now (in Sen's currently) completely ignore any amount of defense I can muster, and dodging tends to be the better option, which I can no longer do too well. So...my question is, will my character slowly become more competent (of course as I gain more skill as well, first playthrough ftw) so...I'm just wondering if anyone can give me some equipment tips and such for how to be a good tanking style character.

I apologize for the wall of text, and I apologize for bothering you all with a question in the first place. I just wanted to know if my character would be viable and what not later on. Thank you kindly for reading and responding.

Wow, for a first build, that is very impressive. I am impressed that you picked up early to only specialise in certain stats.

Now, if you want to be a true tank, then maybe mix in some heavy armor (see wiki for more info). Also, i would suggest that you go the regular path with the Zwei, as you have high strength, so you will get good scaling.

Also, do you plan to play online with this guy?

    Welcome to the forums btw.

Thanks, and I did plan on going the normal route with the Zwei, I'm fishing around the wiki for some good heavy armor and I'm looking to get strong enough to get myself one of the larger shields in the game (currently using the Knights) By online, do you mean Co-op and PvP or? I do help when I can online, but with the current bosses it is less of a usual thing due because tanking isn't as viable (I think) for PvP, eh invade maybe later on, and I still have to pick a covenant.
Thanks for the response and welcome ^^

By online, I meant PvP. If you can allocate your stats correctly, then tanking is a viable option for PvP. Also, if you do plan to PvP, then Havel's ring and Dark Wood Grain Ring is a must for tanks. Look those up if you don't know what they are.

It dosen't really matter what shield you use. As long as it blocks 100% of damage, it should be fine.

As for Covanents, if you want to invade, then be a Darkwraith or Darkmoon Blade, and if you want co-op, then be a sunlight warrior.

I see, thanks. I tried to get Havel's and the enemy still nearly one shots me. The Dark Wood Grain Wing, do I need to be apart of the Forest Hunters to get it? I tend to go with the Neutral groups in games so the hunters seemed nice, but I can get join them in the NG+. As for shields, I prefer to be as heavy as possible, so I should try to get those two rings asap.
    Thanks for the assistance ^^

First off, no need to apologize for asking a question, we love to help!

I have a question for you, though: you gave me the impression in your OP that you want to dodge, but can't, and then turned to tanking. Did you say you can't dodge because your character is too slow, or because you aren't skilled enough yet?

If you're still interested in taking, but want to get better at dodging, I'd recommend you get the Eagle Shield along with the rings Ima suggested. The Eagle is a greatshield, the largest category of shield in the game, but it only weighs 6 lbs. Coupled with Havel's Ring and the Dark Wood Grain Ring, you should have no problem being under 50% of your maximum equip weight, which will allow you to move and roll at the best move-speed.

This way you have the best of both worlds. You can tank and practice dodging.

Also, until you upgrade the Elite Knight Set more, you could be better defended with some non-upgradable armor sets. Early in the game, I like to equip the Stone legs and gloves, and the gold hemmed shirt and hood. Compared to your Elite Knight Set, this should give you roughly the same defense, but a bit more poise, too.

    Interesting thanks, I'm currently getting souls to get the item to go into the forest, I figure I can make it to the covenant, kill Shiva's body guard and get out >_>;

And I meant that, in the current section of the game I'm in, tanking doesn't seem as good as dodging, I don't really have an interest in dodging, I want to get the highest poise and such that I can really.
    Thanks for the help ^^

Sorry for the double post...but I just got both of the rings and the stone knight armor. Am I going to be hunted down by the spirits of vengeance for the rest of the game now? Even though I already absolved my sins :>

You may also want to backtrack a bit Omega. If you are looking to make a tank build, then you will want a greatshield. As they have heavy deflection and can absorb hits without breaking your guard.

Since you are already in Sens then you have passed through Blightown. There is a shield back there called the Eagle Shield and it is one of the best shields in the game. So you may need to go back there and track it down. Message me if you have any other questions or look it up on this WIKI.

Oh, I know. I have the Eagle shield and just started using it. Currently, I still need a bit more endurance to use the Stone Gloves effectively since I don't know if I can take the shortcut back to Blighttown and through the Demon's Ruins currently.

Thank you for the assistance as well.
