up the stairs as far as you can go and look for a small door in a wall on your left, the monumental will be the monk looking dude with a candle near him (the area is lined with dead lookalikes so look for the candle.)

I never played demon souls, so I will ask...
Can you kill the black maiden? Just curious if you can hurt her or not, since you can kill her at the end of the game for souls.

You know I had this problem the first time I played it. The problem I had was that I didn't realize I had to beat 1-1 to be able to open the passage to the Monumental, I think I wasted like 40 mins trying to find it despite people telling me it was at the top.

Nah, if you try to kill her she just falls over and gets backup saying that she cannot be killed.
