    Gaming Habits Empty Gaming Habits

Post by Hart Sun Jun 30, 2013 3:07 am

Would anybody like to share their habits while gaming?
    Stuff like:
    -Background Music
    -Posture/Seating
    -Favorite controller
    -Self-hyping
    Anything

In games like Darks Souls, or fighting games where theres no point to listen to the ingame music I like to have my stereo on playing some background sounds, generally some rock music (Seether, In this Moment, Evanescence, Devilskin to name a few) or some rap (mostly just Tech N9ne, Eminem or Hopsin/Funk Volume: I seem to prefer lyrics to a good beat while gaming cause I can focus on the words and sort of 'zone in' to the game.)

During the first playthrough of a game however its all ingame music, have to watch every movie/cutscene and I will even generally let the entire credits roll on the off chance there is something missable right at the end.

Seating: Nothing too special here, I often slouch or lean with my leg hanging over the arm of the couch. Only thing I really can't handle is playing laying down, just throws me off.

I have a loud family, and I have to leave my door open, so I always have headphones in and loud music playing.

I usually lay down in some odd way that's very comfortable. That or I wrap myself up in a pile of blankets during the winter and play away.

I only have one controller, although when I bought a USB mouse for my laptop because I dislike trackpads if that's worth anything.

Self-Hype is through music, if I'm about to fight a final boss I might listen to a cool remix of a good song.

-Background Music: Definitely depends on the game. When I'm catching bugs/fishing on New leaf (grinding if you will) I sometimes just watch Family Guy as the game doesn't require too much attention. Sometimes I'll actually play it while waiting for an invasion. As far as music goes that definitely depends on what I'm doing. If I'm fighting a friend then we agree on a song to listen to (usually part of an OST) and we go at it. Dark Souls is my main Xbox game, but sometimes I'll listen to some Jazz and play Battlefield. Radiohead is definitely good as the night goes on.
-Posture/Seating: I have a gaming chair so I normally sit in that when I'm alone or one other person is over. If multiple people are over then I may sit on my bed, on another chair, or just stand sometimes. If I'm playing 3DS, as I have been, then I'll go downstairs where it's cooler and just play on the couch with the fan on :3
-Favorite controller: I've been using a controller for about 3-4 years and it is finally getting so bad that I have died because it walked off an edge even though I didn't hit. I just got my first controller that I only used for about a year and it feels brand new.
-Self-hyping: If I'm playing with my friend then we will go all out and have a blast. If someone trash talks us we will spend the rest of the night trash talking back (we like to invade at same SL and same place). If I'm playing New Leaf I'll sometimes just get all relaxed as that may be the most relaxing game in the history of everything...for the most part.

Well, it all depends. I like playing while using the computer for music and browsing Cracked, Tvtropes and the forums.

I can't lay down or have music on if I need to be cereal while playing. Not hearing the game sound really throws me off for some reason.Otherwise I'd be listening to Avenged Sevenfold all day.

EDIT: Forgot to say that I use an Xbox controller for my PC games where possible, doesn't work for MMOs but it helps me play shooters since I can barely use a mouse.I'm a console kid, that will never change no matter what platform I use.

I hold my controller differently than most people.  Thumbs are on the right analog stick and left analog stick(D-pad for 360), index fingers are on the XO-triangle-circle buttons/XABY buttons and the D-pad for PS3/left analog stick for 360.  And my middle fingers has the shoulder buttons.

I also keep the controller as close to my face as possible(sometimes covering my mouth).

Used to do all that until I got my PS3.

Smaller controller meant I could actually use it without having to hold it like that, so I broke the habit. :S

For background music, I'll usually play some metal orchestra. Other than that, I guess I try to set the difficulty as high as I can handle it on a playthrough.

I normally only play background music for a boss that doesn't have a good theme and when I do it's normally an OST from somewhere else.

When I play a game it's like I'm in it. I try to look behind a corner in the game, I'll actually turn that way as much as I'd have to in the game. Or, say, I'm looking down a cliff while sitting on the floor. I'd suddenly stretch my neck further up and try to look down.

When there's no dialogue and I'm in some intense fight while playing, I usually get something fitting played in the background.

I get so deep into the game I start talking to myself, and sometimes even respond to the characters in-game personally.

When I play a game I move around a lot. I may sit down on the floor for a while, then get into my computer chair, then suddenly move to my bed where I'll lie down for a while, then to my armchair, and then moving back to lying down on the floor. I usually do it without even realising it.

That's about all the gaming habits I have.

Depends on what else i'm doing. Since I have a small room I have to sit on the bed with my back against the wall. If drinking a tea, I sit on the floor with back against the bed cause small table is 3 feet from bed, (not right beside it). No music because my pc is buggered and can't play music while playing DkS cause ps3 won't allow it. Never have game volume up cause repetitive sounds annoy me. Also, hard to hear phone downstairs if too loud in room.

How do you hold it like that comfortably?

I always have my thumbs on analogs and move them to the D-pad and XYAB buttons when I need to, with index on the RT/LT/RB/LB buttons.

I do know what you mean by holding it close to your face though, I do it all the time.

I usually listen to background music in games that involve vehicles, cars, planes and such, mostly TrackMania and War Thunder. Otherwise i just listen to game sounds, or i won't feel safe. (Pink Floyd makes for wonderful video game music)

I play with a PS3 controller, assymmetry just feels wrong after my years of PS2; for War Thunder i sometimes have to hold the controller vertically with my (left) pinky and play with the rest of my hand, and sometimes my face and mouth, when i have to use the keyboard at the same time, or alternatively, press keyboard buttons with my wrists, or the controller itself.

When i'm very concentrated, i can't see or hear anything outside of the game, and start moving in the same directions as the landscape, not my character, the landscape, and depending on the situation, get really close, or really far to/from the monitor for pixel precision, or to offset tunnel vision.

In RPGs, i tend to hoard valuables, and collect every unique item, and rare consumables, and the best non uniques.
In FPSs, most of my hits are headshots.
I like to cheat in games with lots of dark areas by turning the brightness way up.

I also randomly alt-tab to read some TVTropes, or watch cat videos, sometimes i get carried away doing that.
I also often change the height of my chair depending on how i'm sitting, if i get close to the monitor, i lower it all the way down.

And i usually make no sound

    That's about it

I don't like listening to music, either, generally because I love the musical cues and everything that is in the game. If I'm on my PS3, i just sit at the edge of my bed, slouched, with the blinds and my door closed. If i'm playing on my laptop, i lean against the wall. I like my DualShock 3 controller that I got with my PS3. it has served me well. :3 When i game on my laptop, i just use the mouse and keyboard (i haven't gotten any games that absolutely require a controller...yet). I'm going to college in August as a freshman, and I'm wondering how much this little setup is going to change when i move into my dorm. x)

I tend not to listen to anything other than in-game music unless I've played it enough times to where I feel like I know what's going on. One thing I tend to do on loading screens whenever I have a controller is basically twiddle them in circles because I get bored.

As far as seating I tend to sit in incredibly strange positions, typically sitting on my legs if I'm on a couch or sitting with my legs huddled up to my chest. I basically never dangle my legs over anything and don't sit on anything the "proper" way because I just find it too uncomfortable. I also tend to change positions a lot.

I usually use a controller for everything, including computer, except for RPGs because normally the mouse can serve a pretty important purpose (ie. Dragon Age: Origins). I like to have in-game sound turned up pretty loud because I find it helps me to get immersed in the game.

The main thing I need these days is an “old man” compatible chair.
I see these “young people” playing games while just sitting on the floor and think….
    …my back…the pain! THE PAIN!!!!

Im a controller/pad man all the way,
You may as well hand me a fish as a joystick... because I am equally adept at used either as a means of controlling a videogame.

I also have a semi tradition while playing Silent Hill games (starting all the way back with SilentHill2 right when it came out).

Always play them at night, in the dark, and when I’m all by myself.
Mainly because Silent Hill games are not about “jump scares” it’s about getting you to worry about what MIGHT happen next… then have nothing happen.

    Good times =)
…Well good times in a freaked out kind of way…

I often refer to my character in the first person, make random comments as if the NPC's could hear me, complain about NPC's as if that'll change anything, mock the enemies as if they can hear me as well, and generally just make things generally awkward to watch and/or hear.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and sometimes I provide commentary.

    Game choices

    - Always start as a mage if available

    - Always female character

    - Always take forever perfecting the characters looks

    - Always focus on offensive capabilities first

    - Always find a way to break the game (Glitches in skyrim etc)

    - Like to trick people online

    Game environment

    - Door shut

    - No music

    - Glass of water and phone within arms reach so as to be able to play temple run on loading screens

    - Clicking thumsticks, tapping tunes on the side of the controller

    - Got used to having my laptop on my knee since playing dark souls

    - 3 pillows behind me, 1 of those cylinder shaped pillows under my knees to give a decent angle on the laptop, and usually sat on a giant bear because dammit its comfy

    - Have wiki chat, forums, youtube and google open always

Hmmm... Seems some people have gone quite in-depth in their answers so I thought I might add a few things.

    Character Creation:

    Fighting Games:

    General:

Mr. Tart wrote: When I play a game it's like I'm in it. I try to look behind a corner in the game, I'll actually turn that way as much as I'd have to in the game. Or, say, I'm looking down a cliff while sitting on the floor. I'd suddenly stretch my neck further up and try to look down.

I hear ya on this one Tart, generally takes me a while to get to this point but when I do I start wriggling around and jumping IRL when I dodge attacks ingame.

Elite Knight wrote:I often refer to my character in the first person, make random comments as if the NPC's could hear me, complain about NPC's as if that'll change anything, mock the enemies as if they can hear me as well, and generally just make things generally awkward to watch and/or hear.

I find myself doing this sometimes too. I play alot of the time while talking to my friends via Voxer app on my phone (like a walkie talkie) so we often get carried away and forget to turn it off in the heat of battle, so you get some interesting messages coming through lol. Generally just cussing out the guys attacking us, but sometimes includes giving an NPC a voice and reciting appropriate lines from other games.

Another, slightly scary thing I noticed when I was playing Kingdoms of Amalur, was whenever I did a certain finisher in which your character grabs an enemies head and snaps their neck: after doing a few of these in a row I found myself gnashing my teeth and chewing absent mindedly while I watched it... Time to put down the control and take a break >_>

Anyway some great responses from everyone, makes for an interesting (and very funny) read.

Also, just realized this yesterday but I always seem to go too far off the beaten path in a game unless if there are invisible walls.
