    Wheel of Time AMoL discussion

Post by fujiphoenix on Fri May 10, 2013 5:06 pm

    SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey all you WoT fans! As you may know, the 14th and final installment to the WoT series came out not to long ago. A Memory of Light was one of the most wonderful books I have ever read, and was a perfect swan song for a similarly excellent series. This topic is to discuss the series as a whole, but most specifically, AMoL.

I suggest not visiting this thread unless you have finished the series in its entirety, because by this thread's nature, there will be a metric **** ton of spoilers. cheers

I'll start off. The first thing I realized after reading the last page is Rand now has the ability to weave the Pattern itself to his will, as is evident with his ability to light his tabac pipe without touching Siadar, Saidin, or the True Power. Now earlier in the book, Damodred shows up and almost annihilates Egwene's army with his army of Sharans. They follow him because he fulfilled their prophecies of "Bo the Wyld", which states that they will follow a man who can channel without weaves. Damodred does this by channeling the True Power directly from The Dark One, which can not be seen by other channelers. Now back to Rand.

No I see that this "Bo the Wyld" prophecy was about Rand, because he can quite literally channel without actually channeling. The Sharans were following an impostor the whole time. A whole army pledged them selves to the Dark One because of deceit. How positively evil.

Now my second thing, Mat was no longer bound to the Horn of Valere since he died, and was brought back to life when Rand killed that Forsaken with Balefire. Now since Balefire erases its target from the Pattern, along with there past deeds(depending on how strong the weave of balefire was) then that means Mat never died, because that event was erased. Plot hole?

Honestly, I thought the last two books were spot on. The 12th one was good too, but the new author did an awful job with the character of Mat. He got him spot on in the last two tho. Other than that, I liked Sanderson's books just as much as Jordan's.

If you ever get into fantasy books, they are thee definitive books.

Loved that Rand bit took a few seconds for the pattern to click. Also love he's now in morridins body which fits in with Min's viewing of Aviendha's children being different.

Hard to say on demandred as Bao, Ishamael\Moridin was the only one with access to the true source up until the final battle. Jordan did very little on the sharans but i reckon Demandred twisted their prophecies somehow, you could see they were not too happy when they found they were fighting with shadowspawn probably realised oh thats why the dragon turns againt us. There was something about saving them from the dragon.

Before that don't forget Rand pulled matt down from the tree in Rhuidean and also technically he saved matt's again when he killed the darkhounds that chewed through matt's door, balefiring the hounds wiped the darkhound spittle that had got on matt.

Just thought that bit with the horn was so epic, Elayne about to be gutted to take the children out of her thus fulfilling Mins viewing, Brigitte dead, olver clutching to the horn about to be eaten. You actually thought bad sh1t was going to happen. I hope Olver is Gadal Cain reincarnated.

Jordan wasn't the best writer but the world\history was amazing and it has to be one of the best openings to a series ever. Really liking Sandersons at the moment, he breathed something new into it, the Androl\Pevara scenes were some of the best(they were his characters).

Am Happy but also pissed at the ending, there was waaay too much left open, Seanchan, what did Hawkwing say to Tuon, the black tower vs the white. How's Rand going to deal with the 3.

BTW ever hear of the outrigger novels?

Before he died, Jordan stated that he wanted the Wheel of Time world to end with AMoL. So unless his wife goes against one of his dying wishes, there won't be more books, other than the short story coming out soon, which he wrote.

Also, Hawkwing says to Mat that him being rescued from hanging in the tree wasn't what severed his connection with the horn, so the only other option is when Rhavine(spelling?) killed him, because he didn't die from the darkhound. He didn't even get sick because Rand killed it so quick.

Also, Everyone had access to the true power up until Moridin was Resurrected by The Dark One. Only then was Moridin the only one. And in the last two books, it is revealed that the other Forsaken can use it again as well. The biggest example being Damodred and Taim at the site of the Last Battle. So Damodred had plenty of time to manipulate the Sharans.

The dark one gave them access for the last battle, Mogehedien commented on it, they were using it left right and centre then. Semirage seemed shocked and pissed that Rand could use it. don't remember them using it beforehand, although i always did wonder how semirage managed to survive with the seanchan. I think they had a trickle of it beforehand.

Didn't hear about Jordan requesting it to stop but i can understand the wife not consenting on more to keep his legacy. Outrigger i'm sure would've filled in a lot, also wonder what the 2 prequels would've been, definately wanted more on Gitara Moroso and Tam.

Demandred appearing was awesome because you knew noone hated the dragon more than him and knew sfa on where he was what he was up to for 13+ books. I remember giving out to my mate about half a continent not being aware of the end of everything.

And it's Demandred, damodred was Galad and his da, which also pissed me off, the 2 brothers never met.

BTW read anyof Sandersons other stuff, mistborn is decent but way of kings is amazing.

I enjoyed the heck out of the series. I think the quality did degrade when Sanderson took over, but that might be attributed to Harriet no longer editing rather than Sanderson being a worse writer (which I believe is also true; his writing style does not appeal to me as much as Jordan's though he isn't bad by any means).

Now my second thing, Mat was no longer bound to the Horn of Valere since he died, and was brought back to life when Rand killed that Forsaken with Balefire. Now that we know the Flame of Tar Valon is a particular type of weave that is described as the inverse of balefire, we can't be sure that all balefire is created equally. Rand may have unknowingly manipulated the weave which killed Rahvin in a way that rewound time for some things but not others.

Never thought of that, nice find happy Also, I like how that in the beginning of book 12, Sanderson came right out and said "I'm not as good a writer as Robert Jordan." That's some honesty right there.

She might be by distant relation because she could've been in the succession battle after Laman's death.

Surprised at the sanderson mention. Thought the series was going a bit flat and going nowhere up until Jordan's last book Knife of dreams, crossroads of twilight was awful. Jordan created a great world but some of the characters were pretty generic and he went on at times, for example the andor succession took waay too long and got tiresome.

You'll pick them up in the bookrepository.co.uk for around 4-5 quid each. And don't read of the stuff here, because if you do, i will find you and i will nerf you.

Actually just finished up AMOL on audio, did the 3rd series reread via audiobooks.

Whats really been bugging me is, Gitara Morosso sent Tigraine to the AielWaste but why send Luc to the blight.

Love that bit from the new spring graphic novel.

Crossroads of Twilight was a book completely dedicated to build-up for what was planned to be the final book in the series. It's unfair to blame Jordan for the narrative dragging along when that was by design.

    I agree^

What was your favorite scene in the series? Mine would have to be the battle of Dumai's Wells, and the scene where Egwene sacrifices herself and kills Taim. I was like  ........................NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! sad 😢

So many epic scenes, Rand experiencing all the possibilities while taking the waystone in the great hunt, the rhuidean vision, Dumai's well with rand going buck ape, bam stilled, bam stilled, Egwene telling Elaida how it is, the dragonmmount scene, Perrin showing Egwene who runs the show in the dream world, 'It's just a weave', Demandred's unveiling, you just never saw it coming. the list could go on and on. Any scene with Matt, especially the ones with carefully laid plans.

Are we all agreed that either Gawyn or Elaida were the biggest idiots in the series?

The scene that had the most impact on me was when Rand was in the Stone and tried to re-animate the body. Really haunting.

Aside from Rand, Egwene was probably my favorite character. Mat comes close, but Egwene's arc was just so much awesome.

Im a big reader and although iv never read these books iv read other fantasies like lord of the rings, the seeker, a song of ice and fire... and my favorite of all of them was the chronicles of Thomas covenant... those books are dark and almost in a depressing sort of way but they will alwasy be my favs.... so ya if ur lookin for a new fantisie try those... its lord of the rings but darker.

Egwene in the tower and making asses of Romanda and Lelaine was epic but she drove me mad when she got into b1tch mode with rand at times.

Poll seriously read these, i though the seeker books were decent until i started on these and others, they're very very bad compared to these.

speaking of epic series ending, i'm reading magicians end the final riftwar book at the moment, riftwars had its moments(serpent wars) but pales in comparison to WOT. Also i'd advise checking out erriksons malazan books.
