    Laptop Decisions

Post by The Letter X on Wed May 01, 2013 6:55 pm

I am buying a laptop soon, and I have two in mind. I will be using it for gaming, and I know that laptops are horrible for gaming, but I want something portable. I don't need to run top of the line games at max graphics settings, but I just want to run them smoothly at low-mid graphics.

The two I am thinking of are:

    http://laptops.techcrunch.com/m/l/90/M11x-Core-i7

    and

    http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-17r-5721/pd?oc=fncwv35s&model_id=inspiron-17r-5721

I really like the Alienware's size and the fact that it is an Alienware, but its slower processor and half the amount of RAM compared to the Inspiron deter me away from it.

The Inspiron has the integrated graphics card which I hear terrible news about all over the place, but it doesn't seem much worse than the Alienware's. It has much more memory as well, but the Alienware's 256 GB is more than enough for me.

So I'm wondering what I should do. Is the Inspiron's i7 processor and 8 GB of RAM enough to ignore its graphics card, or should I get the Alienware and upgrade its RAM to help?

Like I said before, I don't need it for intense gaming, only to run them smoothly.

*The game I am planning on playing exclusively is Champions Online, and here is its system requirements: http://co.perfectworld.com/news/?p=584171

If you ever are wondering where I am, it will most likely be there. I enjoy the game immensely even on a $250 laptop.

Upgrade the Alienware, in my opinion. To me though, what it boils down to is the matter of money.

They are the same price. The only difference would be if I decided to buy some RAM for the Alienware.

That was my point, in a way.
As long as the RAM doesn't cost too much, I'd be all game for that.

Its all about the gfx card, go with alien ware. Integrated is generally bad, Intel are working on new gfx chip sets but you won't see anything decent integrated until the next Gen or so.

Btw you do know alienware is dell.

Just saw the alien ware HD is 7200rpm so yes alienware.

I do, I was just stating that it's built for gaming.

I'm starting to consider dishing out a bit extra for a better Alienware with a nice gfx card , but I might not have the money for it.

You might want to check the mobile precision line, m4700 and m6700, might be able to customize something cheaper.

Take a look at this baby:

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-g6-2244sa-15-6-laptop-ruby-red-17419992-pdt.html?intcmpid=display~RR~Laptops+%26+Netbooks~17419992

This is what I got around christmas time- frankly it's ability is a steal for the price (I mean what the hell are you gonna do with a terrabite?), but I've had this and run games like Alan Wake with zero problems at medium graphics while on the medium performance kinda plan.

    Pretty cheap, pretty good- win/win?

I admit though it's not quite alienware, but just in case you were looking to save a bit of cash.. Apologies that I gave you a British site, but I'm not american silly
