It's a common bug. When it happens I prefer when it turns me red, as opposed to gold or white.

It's a glitch,I once invaded and joined as a white spirit.No idea how but it just happens.Usually happens in the forest.

I've heard it is linked to when people Disconnect while being summoned. But all guesses are good I guess

i had my dragon eye down and was sitting in at the bonfire in anor londo by solaire and invaded as a red phantom, spawned as if i used an orb.

Yeah, occasionally they get the wrong color... there might be something to the disconnect theory because whenever I use the 
and it says I'm invading as a dark spirit in the forest it says disconnected as soon as I spawn.
The weirdest one was when I used the
, then it said I was invading. I spawned at the normal invasion spawn point as a white and I went to the usual sign spot and saw the host and a phantom. We all proceeded from there as normal. I was curious if he summoned me, or thought he was getting invaded or what so I sent him a message but he didn't write back.

You can tell the game what color you want, but that doesn't mean you'll get what you want. Sometimes I think this game has a mind of it's own.
