On your first playthrough you should definitely use a shield until you get the hang of things. Use it wisely and cautiously until you learn most of the enemies' patterns.
After a while, wean yourself off the shield and do what you want. There's also the option of just never using one starting now, and if you're still having fun while doing it there's nothing wrong with it.
P.S. - Going shieldess gives you +20 cool points and makes you an all-around great person.

Shielding is a good way to learn the game, but learning to dodge is more efficient overall.
Generally people play their first playthrough however they have to, then they do a Shieldless (The more ambitious go full naked) run, which forces them to learn how to dodge.

Even now I've played the game for a significant amount of time, I still like to have a shield on me just in case (plus I'm on of those people who isn't at all consistent with performance or ability), it really saves your ***.
Shieldless really isn't that hard though once you learn to dodge, it just means you have to accept that you'll have to heal more because you can't always dodge perfectly.
