Scariest Monster

If we are allowing Demon's Souls, the Man Scorpions in the Latria swamp.

*** you From Software, one of those things came out of nowhere and made me throw a controller.

And Crag Spiders, that human head they have always freaks me out.

- That whole scene with the Pisacas in the Duke's Archives

- Skeleton dogs in the Tomb of the Giants

- Gaping dragon (the design is just....wow!)

- The first Mimic in Sen's Fortress

EGGHEADS HAVE FEELING TOO!

They aren't really scary, they just nasty and gross. I think being scary has a lot to do with the combination of how dangerous they are, and the overall design. Egg carriers are indeed scary in design, but don't pose a threat. Atleast until you break them open, don't underestimate those maggots in groups they're pretty dangerous.

Mimics. They get me every time.

I can only imagine just waking up, a bit wobbly after you get on your feet, try to take a drink out of the fridge, only to get a ninja-spinning kick in your face
Or you know, teeth :roll:

Other than the Dogs in Tomb of the Giants my scariest encounter with an enemy would have to be about an hour into my first play through or less.
I had picked the thief as my first character, so I went down below to check things out, went and unlocked the gate to the valley of drakes, crossed the bridge and starting walking into a cave.
All of a sudden, the lighting just switched, form a normal looking cave, to a dank, dark abysmal cold feeling all around.
I instantly got the feeling that I was all alone, or was I?
I could barely get myself to push forward on the controller.
I, as slowly as possible crept toward the darkness, not knowing what to expect.
Eventually, I saw a set of eyes, and then a silhouette, of a big fat troll like monster just standing there, breathing, holding it's ground. Then I noticed one behind him. "Two!" I thought, "fnck this!", and took off from whence I came.
That was my first true "Dark Souls experience" I ever had.
The memories of my first play-through are so amazing.
I cant wait for Dark Souls 2 so I can have more of those one of a kind experiences that are so rare in games these days.
I'm just glad From and Miyazaki had the balls to step up and bring something so new and fresh to the gaming world, that I think it's changing the way players and developers are thinking about and making games. I cant wait to see what comes in the near future.

Actually, almost everything in the Tower of Latria is twisted.

Reading through the thread reminded me of a few more stories. First, what happened the first time I went to the Valley of Drakes:

I was running along happily in the darkness. At this point, I didn't realise there was a sky here, so everything felt ten times darker. I got to the undead dragon, and it scared the crap out of me, but only because I didn't see it. Now me, with my vast store of intelligence, decided not to look around, and instead I proceeded to whack the strange mass of stuff in what turned out to be it's eye. Then I put down the controller and didn't play Dark Souls of 6 months! I didn't even know there were items there until I read it on the wiki.

Then there was that time I fought the Gaping Dragon:

I had already seen the arena a few times, so when I realised that the fog gate led there, I wasn't too happy. But in I went. The cutscene started and showed the waterfall at the end. "Hmm, I don't like that size of that", thought Repto. Then this tiny little head popped up, and out cam a huge sigh of relief. Then the arms appeared out of nowhere, about halfway across the room. And then the body came up. And then I was kind of scarred of life

To me Gwin is the...well scariest foe of them all. Like almost everything in DS he is out to kill you but I fell no other enemy is so determined to killl the player.
It just sends shivers down my spine.

The only way I can beat him by myself is with Iron Flesh, but I haven't tried that against him after the nerf.

Also, It's possible to kill him with just one reposite. It's on a video somewhere in youtube.

When I first got into the depths and I missed the shortcut to Gaping Dragon, I was terrified of those bugged eye frog creatures after getting "Cursed" for the first time. Luckily I had some purging stones with me.

The skeleton dogs I find are some of the worst monsters to encounter for the first time, especially when you just get surrounded and killed.

I dunno about any of you guys, but when I got chased halfway through a level by the first black knight I ever encountered, managing only to temporarily stave off death, I thought that was a pretty scary moment, a feeling of utter hopelessness.

Scariest monster is...Black Knight in Catacombs.
Not because he is, by definition, scary. But, you're either fighting him as he gets the jump on you, above a pit of Bonewheels or you're fighting him in a tight corridor or outside with the Bonewheels.

I fought him in that room you fall into a bunch of times. One day I was fighting bonewheels and he appeared to kick my butt. I said, "Woa! You're not supposed to be here!"

Mimic , Mass of Souls , Manus , Bloated Mage , BP Chained Prisoner

Quite a few enemies have caught me off guard - Mass of Souls's giant spike thing was quite upsetting, especially as I couldn't work out where it came from for a while.


Also, first time I fought the ghosts:
'Take THA-... RUUUUN!'

Second time:
'I have magic now! This'll sort you ou-... RUUNNN'

Also, the Stray Demon's arena. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.


HOWEVER... Special mention goes to the room before Nito. Walking in and seeing 8 Pinwheels... that's not good. Trying to snipe them and then a BABY SKELETON runs at you... also worrying. Then, I thought myself safe, saw a ledge I could slip down to, got the White Slab, came back... oh look, water, that looks OH GOD BABIES OH GOD WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PLACE

Me, whenever my chosen undead dies!

Failing that, the Mind Flayers from DeS are pretty flucked up! :pale:

Eh, those chaos eaters beat them in my opinion. Those things are just nasty :/
