I heard mumbling as well when I was farming there earlier.
The archives is the best source of magic books so I guess this is where all of the mages go.

You know, if you got to he crystal caves where Seath is, you can hear whispers. Turn up your noise real loud and you hear words speaking to you. They tell you that you've made a mistake, a horrible mistake....i know theirs some pvp in here, but keep watching and eventually you'll hear it

^ Why didn't from use those instead of skeletons? Anyway I do hear something from the channlers but I can never get it, just mumbles. Though the crystal caves you can hear whispers of both genders saying something.

In my experience the Ring of Fog and Hidden Body spell neither work too well against the channelers... I don't know if it is because the six eyes or what.. and Looking at the eyes closely they seem to have a peculiar depth about them..
