I´m the only one around here ... !? [Abyss/dark magic]

Post by Fotitudo on Fri Jan 11, 2013 12:16 pm

... who tries to use them in a fair way?
No seriously, i love my int build and hell i love my moonlight GS, but everyone cries like a little schoolgirl, about dark magic.
But i hate to called being a noob, so i decided to rebuild my char.

I wont use: Manus/tin cryst. catalyst, ***-crown, sun-crown or even bellowing dragoncrest ring. Ill only use Logan´s with 44 Int.

I never spam any magic in a fair duel. Even if i lose!
And i only use pursuers, if my opponent buff (cmw, slb or dmb) or i dislike the playstyle (Giants/Havels + family mask, fischer, magic spammer...) Or they give me the option while we fighting.

What´s your opinion, can i be skillful WITH dark magic?

Of course you can be skillful. Juggling 5 spells of 3 different types in my pure caster build takes skill. Setting up my opponent takes skill. Setting up the order of my spells to be most efficient for my playstyle takes skill. Yes, you can mindlessly spam your spells and win, but playing against a mage w/ skill and a mage who just spams is night and day, as with any build.

i've haven't used any magic for a long while now. though i have fought a lot players that like to spam magic (mostly dark bead or souls spear) i have also fought several that used magic sparingly and only to punish my mistakes. those mages are far more effective in PVP than the spammers, not only are they less annoying but they beat me more frequently than spammers do. i wish more PVPers would rely less on spamming in general (not just magic).

Granted, this was before Dark Magic (been a while since I played my Mage), but I used to get compliments when I dueled with my pure caster. I did juggle spells a lot, which makes it interesting for my opponent. Also, I never used a shield, had 0 poise, and used Logan's. Mostly, it was in the Painted World, fighting in the small rectangular area just above the bonfire, that got me compliments. It's pretty tight there, so dodging and casting, while juggling spells, does take a bit of skill, and your opponents might recognize that.

Anyways the point I'm trying to get at is that, yes, it's possible to play in such a way that your opponent won't feel cheated when you beat him using magic. Start by using no shield and having no poise, and using Logan's is a good idea too. Using Velka's Rapier instead of the MLGS or MLBH might be a good idea, too.

Since all attacks are done (melee or magic) with only a few button combination variations I would say that mechanically all fighting styles require the same level of skill. Therefore, the only skill left to be varied is in setting your opponent up to be hit with the attacks you've chosen to use. In my opinion, magic attacks are telegraphed by the game animations far more than melee attacks are and I have a much easier time dodging them. I would say, honestly here no machismo, that I rarely ever lose to pure casters because I find it easier to not get hit. Also the sacrifices used to effectively make a caster usually mean that my physical heavy style deals crazy damage to casters. The casters who beat me have always had to demonstrate skill. Conversely, I have lost to pretty unskilled melee guys at a decent rate. So.....cast away.

I use dark bead fairly. I believe it was intended as a viable sorcery for low-int builds. I have 16 int and i use it as a ranged attack in place of my bow.

anyone one who can use darkorb effectively in pvp gets a compliment from me, as for the rest of the spells... i can roll right through all of them... i still haven't made a mage file.... i guess its time, enough people should be used to dark magic by now to not complain as long as i don't spam...

Spamming magic is noobish, it doesnt take any skill, easy to do, but, unlike backstabs, arent as rewarding, since most of them can easily be dodged and punished. I have yet to see any good casters out there (magic only users) that somehow make skillful use of them.

a skilled mage is the one who fights unlocked from the target, predicting where they'll roll and firing the spell at said location, this is in my experience any way.

I hate to admit it, but I got whooped in Township bz Dark Orb once. This host combined it with Dark Bead, so I wasn't sure what will come next and he always launched it unlocked in some direction.

That thing doesn't hurt as CSS, it hurts around the leves of Great Heavy Soul Arrow, or less, but it flies really far, furthest of all Sorceries, it's fairly large and it totally laughs at Poise.

His switching between these two ultimately killed me with DB in my face, but he was the only one I ever met who used Dark Orb and was actually good with it.

    To topic.

Magic, of all forms takes no skill to use, but it requires a lot of skill to master.

    Thank you.

If its in game, its fair game. There's no need to handicap yourself because other people suck. (especially at sl >100). Casters have serious tradeoffs for their power. Its a high risk= high reward playstyle.

PS db spam isn't unfair, its just begging to get roll bsd and die or eat a roll r1 for counter damage.

It does, I'm not sure if it works against all spells, but when I spear poked with Leo Ring it did extra when someone casted DB into my shield.

Personally I am currently playing a co-op glass cannon mage sunbro. I only use the dark sorceries to complement my non-dlc ones. But of course, since I am playing co-op, it is rarely if ever a 1v1 pvp situation. There is skill involved in juggling spells, and in dodging those spells. I recently fought someone who ninja flipped through every single spell I had (not every cast mind you, I didnt last that long and would have switched to melee before that), before teaming up with an environmental enemy and killing me with, you guessed it, a katana that had bleed damage. Spell spamming is easily avoided, the one and only issue with it is if it hits, it hurts.
