I think some new players confuse my dragon sign for a summon sign?

I have a low level character that I used to join the dragon bros, and dropped my sign in the Burg and Parish. I assumed that I'd only get summoned by other people on low-level runs. But I think that some of them assumed I was just a coop helper from that covenant. One poor dude summoned me, then went charging down to engage the Black Knight in the Burg.

You can't imagine how bad I felt for him when he realized he could lock onto me as an invader as well. He ran up to the little courtyard where you can climb the ladder to get at the firebombers. I followed him up, trying to think of anything I could do to help him. It took a minute, but the guy finally figured out I wasn't going to attack him. But he was a base level cleric with only a mace. I almost wish I had thought at the time to drop him an elemental weapon, but it was over pretty fast.

I got the scale, but it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.

Sometimes I offer to let them kill me, and then split the scales. or if they're the dragon and I kept killing them then I give them some so they aren't wasting their time.

Those dragon Scales come out of nowhere anyway, might as well share.

I'm glad you didn't, especially if it was his first playthrough. Starting with an elemental would change a person's Dark Souls experience drastically.

On topic, I was summoned by an obviously brand new player (kept backstepping, which is a good sign they're getting used to the controls), and all of a sudden I see the "Summoning Dark Spirit msg or whatever it was. I'm thinking, "Oh ****." It's the only time I ever spawn-killed an enemy, but I sent the guy a msg asap telling him I was sorry but the host was brand new and thought he was summoning help.

Where did that guy get a dragon scale so early on? Did he kill the undead dragon in the valley of drakes? Or did he run all the way down to Blighttown before even killing the Taurus demon? I doubt it if he was new and used only the basic cleric gear. Because IIRC, you need to have a dragon scale in your inventory in order to summon dragonbros. Or was it changed in some patch?

Once you get a bow and arrows, it's not that hard to kill the one in the valley of drakes. They probably read the wiki

You don't have to have a scale...the game just generates one even if nobody has one.

@Callipygias - you're right...this would have changed his experience. I just felt bad for the error. If I had dropped him some souls, would he have been able to retrieve them after respawning?

I'm pretty sure you need to have a scale on you to see the summoning sign, even though one is generated at the end of the duel.

Nope, I'v had dragon's who who drop scales cause they can't carry anymore, and they're gone when I comeback.

Hmm, not sure then. I did summon someone last night and we messaged each other a few times. He commented that he found it odd he could see my sign even though he had no scales.

That is indeed odd, You have to have a scale to see the sign as far as I'm concerned. The Wiki says the same thing. Strange indeed, though It wouldn't be the first time weird things happen in the game.

Probably some sort of glitch. Dark Souls online play is full of all kinds of glitches.

That is strange indeed. Not like it was just an isolated incident. I'd say in the course of the evening last night, at least 4 different people summoned me using starting class gear. Guess we'll have to test it a bit.

Maybe' it's like way of white? People with dragon scales take priority, but if no on has any then it just put's the summon sign in any world. Did it take a long time to get summoned?

i've seen dragon signs on non bb'ed characters with no scales, just means more pvp for the dragon bro's so all in all i think its a good thing.

Do you remember if it was before or after patch 1.06?

Possible your sign came through as a wss, the way phantoms become invaders and vice versa.

Honestly, not really. A couple of minutes in the Burg, which is where most of the beginner level people summoned me. In the Parish I was summoned by higher level people.

Is it just that the game only shows the sign to people with scales? Maybe that's the part they patched. Perhaps it became clear that not many people were acquiring scales early on. Is it possible the patch made it so everyone can see the sign, even without scales, and the game just generates one for the winner? I don't even think I lost one from my inventory when I lost.

That did happen to me once, in the Parish, because the knife zombies started attacking me when I made my way through the mob. That was fun. Spawned far from the host, in the middle of that mosh pit.

I accidentally summoned a dragon thinking it was a summon sign until it started flashing, "___ invading"! I kinda freaked out, but had the presence of mind to bow and take it, knowing I would die. I would've just given up the scale if I'd known that was an option...

Nah the winner get's a scale regardless, if you had given him one then he'd have two.

They know what they're doing when they summon help. It's the same thing; most of us could just run and pick up zwei, gravelord sword, or whatever instantly, put some stat investment in, and GG all early enemies. Just run through sen's knocking every enemy flat with a weapon you can get seconds after leaving the assylum...don't think elementals are a very big deal. The person is looking to make the game much much easier just by summoning help after all.

The scales don't have to be in your inventory. You can put them in your box and still see the dragon sign.

I've read other phantoms aren't allowed in the world when a dragon person is summoned. Maybe one of the patches screwed up the dragon covenent?

i've been doing allot of low level pvp in the burg and the parish through my dragon eye. i too have been summoned by players who had not acquired any scales yet (confirmed through messaging). i play on the PS3 so it might be specific to the console?

when i invade as a dragon at low levels, i usually drop an item in trade when i know i'm facing a noob with base level gear. i try to leave chunks, twinkling, demon titanite or humanity when i have the available. i might leave a hard to get weapon like the balder swag sword, if i have one, but i never leave upgraded weapons though. i figure its fair if i'm reasonably sure that i could dispatch them quickly.

i also think that it's fun to toy with the noobs on occasion, using base gear and kicking them around without doing any actual harm to them. i might get behind them and kick them in the butt instead of backstabbing them for example. this one time, i got summoned by host who hadn't even figured out the lock on system yet. i punched him around with fists until he eventually killed me. then he summoned me again almost right away. it was awesome because we sparred for a quite a few matches and he kept giving me the scales he won after i let him beat me several times. the best part was that he was noticeably better after each match. i showed him parries and backstabs and he caught on rather quickly. it was a nice experience.

When I have dragon scales that I don't plan to use, I'll summon someone through their dragon sign and drop my scales for him. I'll run three circles around the scales and back off so the player can pick them up.

Almost always, the dragon player ignores the scales and kills me.

I've only been able to summon 2 diffrent dragon people. One of them was really nice, but killed me every time. The other griefed me. He backstabed me when I was fighting an unusually hard walking bush.
