I sent my PS3 like 2 weeks ago to be repaired at sony...

I call them constantly to know how the things were going, they always told me that my console was being tested, the engineer was cheking it, blablablabla... Yesterday it was finished and they sent it back to me, and I was glad to finally have it back.

And then today It arrived... but guess what...?

Wasn't my console... they sent me a new one... I lost all my save files... that was so unfair, and dishonest... a week calling them, and they always telling they were testing my ps3 to repair it and at the end they sent me a new one... c'mon... they could have made a backup at least!

    That's playing dirty sony!
I was close to get that platinum for Dark Souls... I was about to enter the dlc are... more than a 100 hours of playthrough...

    Im so angry rightnow...

I'll have to start over once again!

It's always nice to have a friend that actually knows how to repair such stuffs. These companies tend to be high and mighty and believe they can get away with anything.

But don't worry man, at least you didn't lose a few thousand hours of gameplay. Unfortunately, i have since i began playing at release day. So many lost builds. So many...

when you are talking with support about sending in your console they TELL YOU to back up your saves its not their problem, but yes that sucks, I've lost saves before when I first replaced my hardrive with a bigger one but did not know you would have to format it first so that it runs with the ps3.

Also I haven't had to replace my ps3 for a while (since 3or so years ago) but it only took 1 week for it to get there have them tell me it was a unfixable problem, replace it with a brand new fat ps3 (the way I like 'em silly, ps2 games deserve some gametime too.) and even though I was out of warranty, it only cost me $50, so forgive me If i dont just hop on the wagon and whine that Sony is so greedy and evil".

@automancer well actually I lost more tan 200 hours of gameplay and that SUCKS hard...

@Conrack what makes me angry is ther dishonest way to proceed... A week telling me "we are testing it, we are testing it, the engineer is analizing the problem, etc etc" and at the end they just decided to send a new one... that's is no fair! but well, let's start again!

There is also a back-up option in the setings menu, but you'd better have a large external harddrive because it backs up almost everything on the ps3.

Are you serious? The PS3 does this? I always thought it would only save to the hard drive...

Yeah... I couldn't buy an external harddrive just to back it up... Here in Mexico their price is as much as I earn in a fortnight so it wasn't and option for me... plus It was 2 weeks before my warranty expired so I had to act fast... and when I called sony the guy with whom I speak told me they weren't going to erase my saves... (which if you think they didn't do... they just sent me a new one so my saves are just having fun somewhere on a warehouse xD.....

Sony doesn't repair as you imagine it.

They take your console, evaluate if the damage, or the problem was caused by user, or by some inner fault (to make sure if your insurance covers it), and then they give you a used one.

Yes, indeed, the console you got from Sony is not new, we call it repass in my country. No idea if it has an English equivalent.
It's basically just some broken console, like yours, but they repaired it (replaced broken parts with new ones, but the rest is original, used for god knows how long), so it works as it should and then they give it away.

It is by no means a new machine, it has used parts in it and it will break again, usually sooner than later.

Because of all this, they can't save your data, you have to do that yourself.

Plugging in an USB device and copying your data is a good idea, but it won't always work, because some data cannot be moved this way (especially game data).

Take Dark Souls save data for example. Only way to save protected data like this, is to use PS+. You can upload your data to some cloud and then download them again.

Perhaps Sony no longer does this, I'm not in the bussiness for the last year and I may have ruffled someone's jimmies by saying all that.

You can cloud save if you've paid for it, as someone said. It will even auto update all game data daily if you set it to, so you don't have to do it yourself.

As with any electronic device, its always a good Idea to have a backup. Possibly 2.

An easy to remove HDD is nice but how big is yours and what did it cost? I'm running a 750gb HDD on my fat ps3 that cost $75

Removing PS3's HDD is easy, and it is intended to be removable (removing HDD doesn't break the insurance), however its data are encrypted and are very hard to acess, not that I know how, mind you.
Also, if you put an HDD into PS3 it will require you to format it and will refuse to use the HDD unless formated, so you will lose all the data stored on it.

Really, only safe way to backup your game data on PS3 is to use PSN+.

well easy as in press a button and pull it off is really what I was getting at, I am well aware of the necessity to back up your saves before swaping HDD Ive even mentioned in an earlier post about the option to do so. I figure the "must format drive" thing is likely an anti cheating method.

I have yet too successfully remove a HDD from a ps3. Tried once, stripped the screws, got over it. Though I suppose I'll probably have to... someday.

And about Sony... yeah... they suck. My 60gb got the YLOD and the customer support guy acted like I was crazy or something. Luckily I had a spare 40 gb laying around so I just used that till it died from YLOD about a year and a half ago. I didn't even bother sending it in.

I don't trust Microsft either, my first 3 x-boxes died from RROD(1 of them in less then a month) so I got over it and used the Ps3 I had and never used

maybe i just have terrible luck with consoles?

Ive never bothered with a screwdirver I had already read that the blue screw was pretty cheap so I took pliers and flattened the edges so I could turn it that way, doesn't look as pretty any more but so what its inside the machine.

I currently have the 320GB HD. And I don't know how much the standalone HDD costs. But that's cool.
