Any thoughts on this build? Empty Any thoughts on this build?

Post by Ubcmflt Fri Dec 28, 2012 6:11 am

I have about three hundred hours logged on Dark Souls, and during those three hundred hours, I had never considered a med/heavy build. Spent another forty hours, and it turns out that it plays much more differently than what I'm used to (which is fast rolling and crit spam).

    http://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/?c=462821075370160318

A couple things I considered with this build:

-I'm not there yet. I have about 35 vit and 14 faith. The endurance is taken care of, which lets me medium roll.
-Most people I've fought don't have the poise to trade hits with this build (nearly all the damage I've been causing has been through two-handed swings). A majority of the people I invade are fast rollers with the Wolf Ring, and I think that a 2H Ul. GS breaks 72~ish poise.
-It's been much more punishing people than dealing damage. When I block with the shield, they pressure; when I pull out the sword, they poke with whatever (Imminent punishment). Not sure what to do if I find another heavy (except pray that he doesn't have that much poise and a large weapon).
-I was thinking about going heavy, but it doesn't provide the speed I need to dodge magic, fight off gankers and poise BS. Tried using the cloranthy ring, but he was too fat to do anything with the stamina (not that I roll much anyways).
-The 24 Fth is mainly for GMB and force (PvP), as well as Great Heal (for self-support as a phantom). Not too keen on going to 28 Fth to get a panic button.

Anyways, I'd love some feedback on this. Community thoughts would be great.

    Things i would change: http://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/?c=397195962272786734

    1. Since you're using a Lightning weapon, why waste stats in Str when Lightning weapons don't scale? Get the minimum stats required to wield it and stop there.

    2. Use Great Heal instead of Excerpt. Or just keep to Force. Blow them away and use the thrust of the Greatsword.

It's ok from my point. You can mid roll away from Dark magics, you know. It just takes some practice. If they try to keep a distance from you, switch to a spear. Like the Pike, Partizan or Demon's Spear. Demon's is great for chip damage. No need to waste a ring slot of Cloranthy when you can grass.

I changed the armor setup slightly, but you can still use your original while maintaining the mid roll.

Geez, Zweihanders everywhere. Not that it's bad but can't people experiment with other weapons? Since the OP is going the faith route, he could also try some axes as well. They can stunlock pretty good too and that Crescent Axe? Simply delightful. For some odd reason, i tend to stunlock more easily with the Cresecent when compared to GS or UGS despite the nerf.

I would switch to the Zwei, it's longer and lighter. Unless you really like the r2 of the Greatsword.

You could also consider swapping the tower shield for a silver knight shield. It has amazing stability for a medium shield, and it's a lot lighter. It also gives you the ability to parry.
Now with the SK shield, you would have enough weight over to use the DGM, it's by far the best ultra greatsword for your stats, if you're fine with 2 handing it whenever you want to attack.

As for the spells, i wouldn't really change anything.

You should also keep in mind that there are other armor combinations that could give you more poise for the same weight.

this doesn't look like your build at all, but it's what i'd do.

    http://mmdks.com/l1r

    dagger to cancel backstabs.
grass crest and bknight shield swap.
    thor cat on swap.

i'd also have a msgs and this armor.
    http://mmdks.com/l1v
just for when i was tired of swinging so slowly and med roll.
^ that armors not optimal, but its pleasant on the eyes and close enough to it.
if you care, jans got a mom mask, dingy armor, uh.. thorn/knight gaunts and hollow soldier legs setup that looks great on paper and ugly as sin in game.

i'll be honest, i dont really like your build.. sorry.

I would do this for the sake of not changing the original build too much. The Greatsword was never nerfed since it's a UGS, and I'm assuming you picked it over the Zwei for its thrusts anyway.

3Giants+Big hat gives you the poise you want and really good defences (Big hat has so much magic res on itself it really compliments heavier less magic resistant armors)

The BK shield lets you block Pyro (mainly GC) without too much worry.

And the Pike is a decent elemental spear (Demon's spear also works but I think the pike is a little better, person opinion)

You don't need the STR you had, so I toned it down in favor of a little more END and kept it at exactly 100 so you *could* arena if you wanted.

Also I think the greatsword is a wonderful weapon, But I usually go +15 and Leo ring with the R2 and roll, oomph

this hurr Since your sl 101 i figured that you wouldent mind going to lvl 120 (since thats the usual pvp build) like jan said, its much better if you rolled with a +15 wep so i put some investment into str and dex. I also equipted the giants shield because of its high resistance to damage (100,60,75,75)
Where the tower shield only has any actual benefit in its stb and its not worth it. I also switched around some of the armour to give a bit better defense and poise.

-Took out the Tower shield, will switch between BKS and SKS when necessary. Reduced weight lets me use Pike and still medium roll (Using tower for helping people out, though).
-Had to keep STR at 31 since I've already upgraded it to that much.
-Using Greatsword over Zwei because of the R2. Catches people off guard.
-Kept the armor because it looks nice to me and I'm too lazy to save Logan or spend souls on Giant's. Will keep that one in mind, even though I would be mostly using GMB and med rolls to evade magic.
-Won't be going to SL 120, really trying to stay near 100 as much as possible.
-Liked Rifter's builds, but I need to stay over 72 poise to eat a 2H'd Ul. GS.

Thanks so much for the help guys, really appreciate it.
Tl;Dr I switched shields and put on a spear.
