Loaned a friend Dark Souls

I loaned a friend Dark souls and it was his first time playing the game. I was surprised he didn't get stuck trying to kill the assylum demon with the broken sword, but yea.

I was explaining to him that monsters respawn every time he goes to a bonfire except for bosses and mini-bosses. I told him that the black knight in undead burg was a mini boss and for some reason he thought that he needed to beat him so he spent about 20 minutes fighting(and dying) the black knight.

Then when he finally beat him he raged when his reward was nothing but a useless ring and then raged again when he got to Havel. He rage-quit after dying a couple times in one hit through his shield.


Oh man this brings me back to my first days playing Dark Souls~

I felt exactly the same in my first steps. Couldnt beat ther black knight and didnt even went to Havel cause i didnt even know he was there. Although i rage quited a few times i allways felt like coming back cause the game really is so great that every dead was bearable, not to say that over night i was trying to come up with strategys to overcome the challenges.

My first huge joy was beating the second Demon, no other game gives you this!

tell him to go naked and dodge his attacks at the last second then backstab him or better yet to work on his parrying, he can try to parry havel! (it is possible)

Good! At least he didn't give up at the Asylum like most people did. I admire your friend for his persistence against the Black Knight. During my first time, i gave up on the BK after 7 times because he kept destroying my guard. =w= And i didn't know how to backstab either.

Havel can be easily strafed and backstabbed, as can the black knight (if you give yourself some room). Also, Havel can be lured to the entrance to his tower, but he will retreat after swinging once if he leaves the tower, you can exploit this by repeatedly re-aggroing him and whittling him down with ranged attacks (this was the way I killed him the first time). Try telling your friend a few tips like these and explain that every enemy can be defeated with proper planning, regardless of level.

i think you have missed the point the dude, he was on about what its like to be a new player on this game, not tactics for killing havel

The idea is that you find or develope tactics as you play. I was simply trying to supply some of those tactics.

When a regular first timer meets someone like Havel, you won't have time to strategize. Havel will crush you like a rock. That's the point the OP is trying to say. Not everyone can think strategically at such times.

The point isn't the first death, it is that you learn from each death. The best way to help someone to enjoy dark souls IMO is to teach them to treat every part of the game as a learning experience.

Nah, best way to help a friend play dark souls is to call them a b!itch. They're desire to prove you wrong trumps all strategey, just ask Ichigo.

Havel? I've still got some dung pies left over from the Capra fight. I'm going to try throwing them through the door. I've always used Poison Mist before.

I try to view Havel as a good way to try to hone my BS/Parry skills against players with heavy toons. Although I know the timing is a little different in PvP.
