In the Dark Souls universe: Gwyn, Nito, Izalith and Manus found the Souls of Lords, 3 of which stemmed their power by the light they created and the 4th, the Dark Soul, from the Darkness that already existed, hampered only by the light that the 3 other souls created.

The question is...from where did these 3 powerful souls, and their unique antithesis, come from? From where originated the power that rivaled the mighty dragons and changed history? Why did 3 souls seek to create light, yet one sought to create darkness?

You can't have light without darkness, life without death, or heat without cold.

Also remember that the intro is the myth that is now told of how the lords came to power, their great war with the dragons, the finding of the powerful lord souls, and how night became day. How it actually happened is totally unknown.

Who knows. They may have belonged to lords who once lived before the age of ancients, and their souls remained hidden until the fire uncovered them. It's not impossible that there's an infinite cycle, meaning that before the age of ancients there was another age of fire, and before that another age of ancients.
We can't know because no one is alive to remember it. Except maybe... the primordial serpents. DUM DUM DUUUUUM!
