Favourite location in Dark Souls
In terms of aesthetics, mine has to be Darkroot Garden. It looks so beautiful and fairy tale-like, with the dark sky and tall trees and the those glowing plants dotted everywhere, and until you kill it, the Moonlight Butterfly in the background also adds to the atmosphere. It also serves as a great contrast to the Undead Burg's crumbling grey architecture and Blighttown's murky brown walkways. It sort of reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth, though I'm not sure why...

Ash Lake.
Oh look, a castle, a demonic ruin, a dark cave, a giant library, ect.
Ash Lake and the Crystal caves are the only truly unique areas, and I just like the lake better.

Re: Favourite location in Dark Souls
There are 3 places that when I get there I always remember to turn the HUD off, if it happened to be on: Crystal Caves, Anor Londo, and probably my favorite, the Undead Burg and Parish. I like the look of the Burg/Parish and Anor Londo so much because of the sunrise/sunset. More than once I've walked off a cliff because I had the camera up, watching the scenery roll by.
Overall my favorite image in the game is probably approaching Solaire for the first time. Walking up to him with that beautiful sky as backdrop and catching a glimpse of a giant dragon flying overhead.

Painted World of Ariamis
I really like the desolate, sad feeling from the place. Talking to Priscilla helps the atmosphere even more, and with all of the deformed, probably rejected enemies I can't help but feel sorry for anyone who is trapped there.

Ash lake as well, as soon as you walk out there you are greeted by the rich white under the blue it looks beutiful. The open space and few enemies make it a nice place to think.

The wyvern bridge is one of my favorite places in the Soul series. I always just like to walk up and down it or stare at the scenery and the Dukes Archives. Once red rider is gone it becomes pretty peaceful.

Ash Lake definitely. That place is fantastic, would've been awesome if they had made it larger and available for pvp.
Also love the view on that little bridge on Sen's Fortress just before Iron Tarkus sign.

Ash Lake is the most beautiful location IMHO. I also love New Londo, it's so damn creepy.

I have to go with New Londo. The gloomy mood is so reminiscent of DeS. When you first go there you think "Wow something really bad has happened here"

Re: Favourite location in Dark Souls
Not so much the place itself, but when you defeat the iron gholem in Sens Fortress, and you are wisked away to Anor Londo. The FMV shows the massive wall guarding the city, and as you raise above it, you see this massive, sprawling city ahead of you, and the sun shining warmly in the background. 8)
Stunning visual indeed.

Re: Favourite location in Dark Souls
Love Blighttown, funny enough. Love how dangerous and lethal it is, specially along the walkways and ladders. That it is a busy "Town" is also cool, the constantly moving elevators, the swiging bridges, yet it looks like it can collapse on you at any moment, like a deck of cards. not to mention the gross and dangerous enemies there. What's more, you are not only fighting the enemies, but the environment as well as any mistep could be your last!
Pity about the lower part of Quelaag though, cause the upper part ain't an eyesore TBH...

Ash Lake is just cool. Epic music, and just the thought of being at the bottom of it all. The trees hold up the entire world above you.

Artistically, the imagery and sounds of Ash Lake are the most compelling and disturbing. Everytime I look up in that area, I swear the entire place is actually UNDER the water. There's a loneliness to that place that I find extremely haunting and dreamlike.

Agreed, New Londo is definitely one of my favourites because it reminds me of DES, same with the Depths - that area has a dirty, cramped feel which reminds me of some of the tighter corridors and hallways found in a couple of areas in DES, whereas many of the locations in DKS are much brighter and more spacious.
I also like the Painted World of Ariamis for the same reason as pointed out by a previous poster - that sad, desolate atmosphere.

Re: Favourite location in Dark Souls
Personal favourite view in Dark Souls is just after you've defeated the Iron Golem where you can look around and see most of the interconnectedness of the world you've travelled through so far to get there. It's a reminder of everything you've done to get to that point. Really epic.
But my favourite area to play through is probably the Painted World. Beautifully and painstakingly created.

Re: Favourite location in Dark Souls
Before the DLC it was the painted world and Anor Londo. After the DLC came out I'd like to add in the area where you fight Kalameet. It just seems so.. calming and view is nice too in my opinion.

Re: Favourite location in Dark Souls
the forest and the royal wood. no only are the aesthetics b-e-a-utiful but the enemies actually FIT with the area, the mushrooms and the big cats and even the covenant give the feeling of nature protecting their land. and the royal wood was like a real life magical place. the way the woods are just to ridiculously big and there's almost nothing in between them........love it
