The Scimitar is already a pretty good weapon this early in the game. Perhaps you could elaborate on what kind of weapon you'd like? "Good" isn't very informative.
The best weapon available at this point is probably Uchigatana. You can get it by killing the local undead merchant. Doing so has no lasting consequences that you can't live with, provided you've bought what you need from him. The only thing that's kind of a pain is that you'd lose the main supplier of Repair Powder and Lloyd's Talismans in Lordran if you do it. You'll have to level up your strength a little bit to use it efficiently, but nothing you can't live with.
If that's distasteful or difficult to you, you might want to just stick with the Scimitar for now, unless you have any more specific preferences.

I concentrated on getting through the original main quest first, so I haven't done the Artorias of the Abyss content yet. I did try to defeat the first boss, but that was depressingly difficult for a no-Vitality Spellsword like my character to pull off at that point.
